Description This little creature is a Nessus Sphinx. I rarely see them but when I do, it's almost always when I don't have a camera!

I'm surprised you got a picture of one of these. I've only seen one once or twice and only for a moment. Impressive.

Such a clean/crisp macro. Love the vibrant colors in the background flowers compared to the darkness of the moth (??)

They really are! I thought it was a hummingbird bird at first!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zane-The-Mudfish In reply to roamingtigress [2012-07-07 21:40:07 +0000 UTC]

There's a reason behind its mimicry. Mostly due to a hummingbird's size, much like a small dog, they often feel threatened or intimated by larger animals. These moths mimic hummingbirds as a defense, because hummingbirds are surprisingly aggressive, and will attack larger animals that seem to threaten or intimidate them.
