Description This slow-moving crab-like creature spends most of it's adult life in the trees. It uses it's large claw to stablize itself while it uses its legs to navigate itself through the branches. It feeds primarily on plants and lichens, but may gorge itself on bird egg and the occasional bird if it can catch one. It's body is full of sharp spines and irritating fur-like bristles. For additional defense it uses a sharp barb at the end of it's tail, that secretes a chemical that will cause hallucinogenic deluisions. Some tribes will extract the poison from the crab to use for ceremonial rituals and more often recreation. This could also coincide with the crab's bizarre appearance making it seem even more horrific when the individual is under the influence.

Done for CA's cow, Asymmetrical insectoid. Had lots of fun with this one.

What a cool concept. The creature looks just the right amount of hideous crossed with something I'd like to know more about.

I'm in love with this one, the concept is genius, the name sounds hilarious and it's such a precious babbu. What's the function of its eyes being asymmetrical though? One for looking up in the branches, one for looking down and possible threats?

rob-powell In reply to Sunjinjo [2014-01-20 01:47:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I guess you could say that it gives the creature a some more perspective within it's environment, I mainly wanted to emphasize the asymmetrical aspect so I was having too much fun with it to think about function or practicality all that much...I'm sure if I designed it again today it would look a bit more plausible

You did great on that aspect, the beasie looks functional enough, also with the right legs being sturdy for hanging on and the slimmer legs for grasping things below, perhaps. The eyes made me think of the cock-eyed squid, which does use one to look down in darkness for predators and one upwards in the faint light (this one is way bigger) for food. ^^

I'm always fond of creatures with an added description, the cultural aspect of natives hallucinating with its venom is awesome.

used this guy as a monster in one of my games. about 10 of them dropped out of the tree canopy onto the players and started clawing them to pieces. they loved the encounter and the art thanks boss!

how Ironic I came up with an idea similar to this for an art class I took in high school when I drew the project "fish in forest" I drew a rain forest with not just fish but I put a horseshoe crab and a couple of other crabs in tree brantches along with a kulala and a snake. although your idea is much better looking.

they do exist, heard of the Robber crab aka the Coconut crab, though they don't fully live in the trees like this one.

I shall research this now, I'm a wildlife fanatic. I'd rather watch a documentary on wildlife than a film I'd been wanting to see for 294739 years. Even if I'd already seen said documentary.
