Description Tori for short.
...I turns out I still draw... hmmm...

this is a new take on an old concept.

robato.deviantart.com/art/Marc…

most of this was done in sketchbook pro. only the effects (shine on top garment, grainyness, outline turned brown) were done in photoshop.

Enjoy!

She looks awesome. I like her prehensile tail, and she reminds me of a Saiyan from Dragon Ball

WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY IS BECAUSE I RESPECT YOUR AS A FRIEND AND ARTIST AND WANT TO SEE YOU IMPROVE. YOU GOT ALL THE POTENTIAL TO, YOUR AN ORIGINAL FANTASY ARTIST AND STORY CREATOR. (so be willing to redo a piece if it will help you learn something new. I find pushing more detail on a picture only helps you discover more ways to polish future pictures)

WHAT I LIKE MOST:
------------------------
nice choice of colors and the pose is strong. Composition is good too with the swords position.

she is big in a great way, nice filled out chest and shoulders to express her strength and the right waist to show off her female attributes. I like dark girls they always bring a wilder nature. She has a good outfit as well.

Your shading is good on the skin. It fits and and shows off her strength rather well.

that is all something ur awesome at and can only be better as you draw more of her and similar characters.

WHAT I WANT TO SEE IMPROVE IN THE FUTURE:
------------------------------------------------------------
Your ability to show more dimension. This pose has a flaw, that her left foot is not flat against floor space so it doesn't give me a good sense of grounding.( amendable if you consider giving her a wooden dojo floor or as easy, a dirt one. though perspective will be your real challenge there. try a one point at least.) She is holding massive swords and while she is strong, I cant say for sure where her weight is centered ( though an A shape leg stance usually has it fall between them equally spreading the weight on both legs so that much works. Another way to determine that is to draw a line from the chin of the character down to the floor, and that side of her body should be where the majority of the weight falls.)

I personally think her head would have been better as a 3/4 looking off in the same direction. Her neck shows off muscles well currently so its a preference, consider exploring that option on a new layer.

the colors under her skirt are too saturated (intense) and matches the outer layer making it seem far more flat as an image and making it hard to distinguish apart.

THE SWORDS could be awesome given you give the more thought BUT what would help more is if you angle some of them (look into foreshortening for this). cause weapons like that come off as really flat when seen from the side. Also you'd benefit on considering her handles some more, it looks like the hands can be cut from the edges that continue all the way to the bottom (ouchies).

Id like to see this go into more 3d space with a touch of mid ground or background and get more story out of this.

WELL THATS ALL I GOT TO SAY, ITS BEEN AWHILE SINCE UR LAST SUBMITTION (me as well...) SO ITS GREAT TO SEE NEW WORK!

...I love you, man.Β

Although I wasn't (completely) serious about this picture (especially the weapons as I was just fleshing out an idea for the character) I did mention that I had fallen into an art block situation.Β

Dude I felt like I was trying to improve for a while...I took a break for a month and a half and drew this with relative ease. I think I needed that break!Β

STILL, sometimes I've had the feeling that to improve, I'd have to break through a glass ceiling to get to the next level. You just handed me a step ladder, and a Gatling gun with this comment.Β

Thank you man.

on the subject of Art Blocks, before i thought it was my creativity that suffered....upon discovery of the truth it dawned on me it was an entirely different thing. This is an aspect of being an artist that many tend to stay away from because it seems "tedious and uncreative" as can be but you should know:

YOUR IMAGINATION IS NOT AS BIG AS YOU BELIEVED.

what I mean is that your VISUAL LIBRARY isn't large enough to "see" more.

InRealLife REFERENCE BUILDING
-----------------------------------------
More then likely, Robato, it is the LACK OF PRACTICE WITH THE FUNDAMENTALS. Like perspective(1,2, or 3 point), photo studies of IRL objects and materials(such as metals, clothes, etc.), Composition(where the focus of detail should be and how the character should be placed on the canvas) and as much human anatomy as you can(which your okay at, but it never hurts to explore more ways to understand and present it in characters by doing real-life studies of the human form).

Use as much of the reference / inspiration material that resonates with your creative tastes. Look at material both fictional and non-fiction to help you IDENTIFY what it is you want to draw most of. (if u like drawing girls, study them, their daily life in detail, their habits, and the way they speak with their body language. If its guns or swords, then how they are made, sold, and used IRL. This kind of studying alone will help you discover more about your favorite things and what to draw about them. )

I believe all of the above is the highest priority. You'll get the most mileage from practicing those while you warm back up on art.
Below is what your done already.

WORLD-BUILDING
----------------------
Being an "original" artist is only as good as the amount of experience you gained from reliable sources. Want to make your females more warrior-like then before, see about making them dirtier, bruised, sweatier, angrier, or bloodthirsty berserk mode like . Maybe look into designing new outfits by considering their culture more and of their possible history with symbols on their bodies and clothing(in as much detail as you can manage). You probably have done this to a good extent before but this is a VITAL aspect to development of rich fictional worlds.

Or draw your original characters interacting with others. From poverty stricken children/adults to ultra rich royalty/elites. It is a helpful experience to expand your character list withΒ  more stereotypes that fit your character stories. Draw them out and see how they can compare or contrast to your original characters' looks and personalities.

MY PERSONAL OPINION (this part isnt gospel)
---------------------------------------------------------
I know your a hobbyist and this isn't a career to you as it is for me so take this with a grain of salt. Your "style" has reached its apex. You couldn't do more for it without working on it from the ground up again. If you have an attachment to it then this will be harder for your to break away from.

If you asked me what to do, Id say try making a few of your favorite characters as if they were a real people, trying to see how they would look given they were more realistic in height, proportions and values (such as the shape of the face.) THIS IS WHY IS RECOMMEND PRACTICING THE FUNDAMENTALS CAUSE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO ANY STYLE YOU WANT ONCE YOU MASTER THEM.

ID ENJOY TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS AND WHAT YOU THINK YOU WILL DO. HEAR FROM YOU SOON ROBATO

This is what friends are for. Hopefully I can give half as much insight to help you in the future.Β

Yes, I agree that i have to push harder and rework some things to improve.Β

So I will.Β

It's what I've always done to this point, and I'll do it again, God willing. This time with the added advice you gave.Β

I'll go back to the fundamentals for a while.Β

Raw talent can only go so far.Β

I'm willing to go further.

I think what I like the most about this gal of yours is that not only is she strong, but she also still has some fat on her, making her look like an actual woman. Love this kind of Stout Strength gal, and you did a fantastic job with her here.

Thank you. Meat on the bones is a good thing, and if someone is going to be that strong, the waistline and overall frame should reflect it. Fat stores energy, after all.
