Exquisite as always. Nice to see the early modern through to 1800s given a fantasy spin on land (there's always pirates, yarr).

Absolutely beautiful. The depth of the scene and smoke affect are totally perfect. Not in my wildest dreams will I ever draw this well.

Very lovely looking, although why are the two armies fights over Angkor Wat?

Haha well it's based on Ankor Wat. No massive reason. I went to Cambodia around the time when I did this painting.

Coolios! I just thought that maybe they were colonial troops or something.

nice uniforms. Wait, bolt-action rifles in lines! *Drops gun and runs out of line for life*

I think the Needle gun was smooth bore. It was also similar to a breach loader; with a single round. It's not as powerful as bolt action rifles, but still pretty devastating against muskets

Uberak In reply to RobbieMcSweeney [2014-05-26 15:01:03 +0000 UTC]

The Dreyse Needle Gun is actually a rifle. The difference between breech-loaders and bolt-actions are simply that breech-loaders are one-shot rifles whilst bolt-actions are repeating rifles as in that they are loaded with multiple bullets.

Is that... Angkor Wat?

Makes a nice contrast with the purely European flavour of the troops.
Also, for some reason they all seem to be lefties, to the extent that the rifles themselves have the bolt on the other side and the soldiers carry their cold steel (I've heard of sabre-bayonet before, but this seems to be a machete-bayonet XD) on the right rather than the left hip.

Yeah, I flip the canvas to see mistakes in my painting.
I've uploaded it so they're all left handed; silly mistake haha.
The building in the background is inspired by Khmer architecture;
well done for spotting it out!

A kukri, I think, is what they have on the belt.  They almost look Dutch to me - maybe it's the flag they have, reminds me of the Dutch naval jack.  But then, if this were an alternate-world Colonial battle, that's be close to the mark.  The Dutch East Indies aren't far away if this is Cambodia, and it's not too much of a stretch to think of them having dealings with the Ghurkas in India and adopting their sidearm.  Kukris are wild and nasty weapons.

RobbieMcSweeney In reply to MrAverage [2014-01-18 19:22:21 +0000 UTC]

Totally agree with you there. That's precisely why I thought of the Kukri; decent weapon from the Ghurkas, and potentially adopted. I did think of the dutch a lot with this. The inspiration for the banners was the Prussian banners used in the 18th and 19th centuries. The shakos are a mixture of the British shako and German Pickelhaubes; and the Cuirass I took from the French. All sorts of stuff going on design wise!

very nice man, I can tell you put a lot of work in this piece . I like it man. my only critique suggestion would be to add more atmospheric light in the back left corner peeking over the hills, I think it could help the foreground pointing guy to pop out more and give options for some dynamic back light.  that aside man, I think this is one of your best man, keep up the good work
