I always figured  that fat missile was a nuke, but with no flare or exhaust, I wondered about propulsion.

No backblast---I wonder if they were launched with compressed air or something?

I take it you are talking about the figurative missile? I would think it would have to be rocket propelled. I also wouldn't think it would be a nuke. Why bother, the things would only blow up one youfo at a time. Secondly, the models I have seen have never included an atomic symbol on the missile.  A simple high yield explosive seems enough to do the job. Especially with some nails or sumpin'. I figure a small amount of high density projectiles coming out of that thing would do the job.
Not that I have blown up much in the way of E.T. stuff!

I mean that big fat missile that pops off the nose of a SHADO Moonbase interceptor.
Judging by the explosion effects on the show, I'd say you were right about the H.E. warhead but I'd go nuke anyway.
Close enough counts with horseshoes, hand grenades and nukes.
After all, it's not like you have to worry about radiation in space.
