The Sandman/Wesley Dodds was a founding member of the Justice Society of America. Apparently, he had prophetic dreams about the team. The JSA was active during WWII, and Dodd did his part in fighting the Nazis, like the time traveler Per Degaton. Sandman was armed with a special gas gun that could put people to sleep and wearing a WWI gas mask. Like most superheroes, Dodd died, but he got resurrected first as a Black Lantern and more recently by Deadman in the battle with the Dream villain, Insomnia.
