Description For Gerry Anderson and the heady imagination fuel he gave my young mind. Part of who I am now is due to his influence, from Across The Pond. Thanks SO, SO much, Gerry.....

Brilliant picture Wonderful sentiments too, which I can fully appreciate as a similarly influenced young 'un "I think it was a case of saying 'what would be ideal, if only we could do it?'" A quote from the man himself in a 1975 documentary. A great philosophy forΒ the advancement of humankind, lets hope it stays with us. Thank you

Beautiful...and fitting, too. While I'm more of a fan of UFO and CAPTAIN SCARLET, I did like THUNDERBIRDS, especially the designs.

Granted, I only really began them in re-runs since I hadn't been born when these shows originally aired, but I was blown away by them.

Gerry Anderson will be sorely missed.

Yup - his model designs were always cool! They inspired many from the UK to Japan to emulate that "cool factor".

RedShoulder In reply to RobCaswell [2013-01-02 16:59:00 +0000 UTC]

If you can it, you should look for "The Art of Mike Trim", showcasing the designs of Mike Trim, who worked on several of Anderson's as a vehicle designer. It should still be in print.

Of course, if you have it already, then disregard!

And you're right about Japan's love of Anderson's works, especially THUNDERBIRDS and UFO.

A very awesome and fitting tribute to a fantastic man! Growing up in the UK in the 1970s there was always something by Gerry Anderson airing on TV, and I had an older brother which meant there was already loads of Anderson stuff in the house; annuals, jigsaws and die-cast Dinky Toys: Thunderbird 2, UFO Interceptor, UFO Shadowtrack, Captain Scarlet's Car, Joe 90's Car, Eagle Transporter. I've still got the Eagle and Thunderbird 2 (complete with tiny Thunderbird 4). I fell in love with all the models and sets in the shows (and regularly had completely crap attempts at making my own). Terrahawks aired while I was at school (I remember thinking how ultra futuristic the computer graphic title sequence was at the time) but I think Space 1999 was always my favourite - even though I was probably too young to 'get it' properly - the Eagles, Moonbase Alpha, the theme music, and the regular inclusion of awesome/scary rubber monsters made it my number 1. I was over the moon (ha!) when I got a Space 1999 Phaser water pistol from an otherwise useless toy shop while I was on a family holiday in Wales one summer. This is probably one of my longest comments here on dA - but I love seeing your Gerry Anderson stuff, it always instantly reminds me how totally cool his vehicles/designs are and brings my childhood awe flooding back... so thank you for that and please keep doing what you're doing - I'm sure GA would be proud to know that his work will be this well-loved and live on for many years to come!

I'm flattered to bring out such nostalgic musings in folks. Even here in the U.S. Gerry Anderson was a fixture to those growing up in the 60's and 70's. There was always something new from him, it seemed... and it was always cool! I remember that Space:1999 water pistol, too! I wanted to buy it and convert it to a "proper prop", but I never did get around to it.

Wow...just learned about this. He really was the Godfather of Special Effects in the same breath as Harryhausen.

(Yes, I know he didn't do the actual effects himself. Like Gene Roddenberry, he was a impresario of imagination where the breakthroughs were allowed to happen.)

Well I think he was more involved in the FX than Roddenberry ever was. Sure Derek Meddings was The Man, but Kubrick contacted Anderson, not Meddings, when he was feeling out options for doing 2001's FX.

BrianThomasX In reply to RobCaswell [2012-12-29 18:27:34 +0000 UTC]

This is true. I only put them together in case someone piped up that it was Meddings, not Anderson who did the FX. Absolutely true 2001 would have been a very different looking movie (or not at all) if it wasn't for Anderson's FX shop.
