Description I had Drell-7 over to visit this weekend and we took a few trips down memory lane with my old Blish adaptation covers. Star Trek 8 was always one of my faves of that set, even if it wasn't horribly accurate. This is my slightly more accurate homage to that fine, classic, wonderfully painterly work.

Rendered in DS3, monkeyed with in Photoshop.

I have these books, and I love the covers! You’ve done a remarkable job here! BTW, I hated the book version of “Friday’s Child”, the TV version was much more enjoyable.

Ummm....Enterprise?  You forgot to lock onto my signal.  Hellloooooo.....I'm down here, still on the planet, and I really don't want to have an encounter with any naughty tentacles!

Great shot, you do some awesome Trek chica work.

Remember missy, you know what happens when ppl wear red on Star Trek.  Though, since you're female, you might not die, but get your dress torn.  Hope you got a spare medieval dress nearby

(I was talking to the model in the poster).

She was a main character & protected by the writers.  She & Scotty.  Otherwise, you're dead.  Speaking of which, my brother read up on starship security for Star Trek, and he found that Starfleet wasn't so happy with the lousy training Security officers were getting, considering the casualty rate in Kirk's time.  They had to totally re-write the program & train their cadets better at the Academy, & that's why security was slightly better in later generations of Starship crews.

Yep-aGREAT homage, and a neat image. Great hair, very '60's! And her pose and expression are full of uncertainty and foreboding. The red overall tones reinforce that nicely. Beautiful!

It was really fun to talk over those old covers and how they shaped our artistic predilections. Its cool that you're free to explore and expand on yours, now.

Yeah, I'm not sure I wanted quite as much apprehension in her face, but I was too tired to keep tweaking. So... a minor art fail, but I'm glad it still works on some level. Mostly I just wanted to play with palette and composition of that neat cover we oogled.

I can just see this as a worn, well-read and love book in my collection.

Heh - man, what a cool job it'd be to do covers for a re-release of the series. Y'know, try to update them but at the same time tap into that classic feel - the vibe we all had when we saw these for the first time.

Do it anyway for fun! Maybe do the full 12 (?) anthologies and 3 season omnibuses.

Excellent! Gosh I love the TOS backdrops best, they really seemed other worldly. Love the "Red Dress", perhaps she doesn't know the likely fate of Kirk's "Red Shirt's". I'm sure you have seen this Tribute to the TOS Red Shirts before but just in case here's the YouTube link.

Thanks again for sharing!

Glad you like it! Yeah, nothing says "classic SF" like nebulous skies and craggy, barren landscapes It's really fun to play around with these elements.

I'd put the title copy right beside her. The Blish Titles were all set up in a box-like area that would have been easy to fit on this.
Another good job!

Nice! Might be a little tough to fit cover copy to, but what the hell?

Now you've got me wanting to go out and rebuild my collection of these. I think the only books I still have are "New Voyages 2," "Spock Messiah," "The Making of Star Trek," and, somewhere, "The Trouble With Tribbles." I fondly remember those years when the "Logs" were coming out, and finding the latest one on the shelves at the bookstore - why doesn't anything feel like that anymore, I wonder ...

RobCaswell In reply to Ptrope [2010-09-24 16:18:38 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't really trying to keep to cover format considerations with this, so I did compact the central area more than I would have if I was going to fit in text. But as mdbruffy says below, and asymmetric layout would still be possible.

As to why nothing feels like those old releases any more, well... the whole distribution and promotion network has changed. I remember the night I stumbled on the Franz Joseph Tech Manual. I REALLY felt like I was dreaming... and was in heaven for days to come. These days when a product like that is in the works, we find out months in advance through internet buzz and we know just where to find it... or pre-order it. So there are no more surprises and no more searching out the right store that might carry it. That and we've been force fed sooooooo much Trek-Drek. You can probably take all the Trek book releases from the seventies and they'd amount to 1-2 years worth of releases today. The money vultures smelled the blood...

Yeah, that was a special era.... and I'm showing my age BIG TIME But they're great memories.

Captain's comment to all the red shirts in the landing party. "Meet back here in two hours, other wise we leave without you." I'd never leave a hot babe like her behind. Ever!

Fantastic setting, light and I really love the classic matte style background.
