Description This piece was done mostly as an experiment in using DarioFish's "Space System" for DAZ Studio - a series of models for creating star systems. The premise is the Enterprise, crippled with its shields down, seeking refuge from a solar storm behind the shadow of a small asteroid.

Enterprise model by Aggi, converted to OBJ format by Celticarchie.

Looks like another hour watching Kirk and crew pull their nuts out of the fire. This time literally.

It's a little know fact that the Borg are in fact based entirely on hamster energy sources!!!

And rightly so...even Hal 9000 was powered by hamsters!

The ship is barely visible on the (cheap) monitor I'm seeing it on. Love the rim effect on the left of the asteroid, and the general idea of this render.

I wish you'd gotten to look at it on my screen when you were here. I wanted to compare.

For a good measure, I'll take a look at it on my calibrated monitor, too.

The ship is crippled huh? Did the red shirt population drop down to 3 guys on deck 4?

This tells a great story. And, I like the fact that the Enterprise is nearly invisible. Well done.

I think it only feels invisible due to the contrast

Looks real good... and it's a classic situation: Captain foolishly puts entire ship and crew in mortal peril, First Officer and Chief Engineer work out some way to save them all... Doctor complains.

I like it!

LOL! Makes me want to stick some words balloons in, radiating out from the ship.

BrentOGara In reply to RobCaswell [2012-05-16 02:09:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes! That's exactly the kind of thing he'd say. Then when Spock comes up with a brilliant (but potentially dangerous) plan to save the ship, Bones'd make a comment about "green blood" and "emotionless"... and Scotty would end up having to push some critical system past it's limits to make the plan work... and in the Captain's log at the end, Kirk would take credit for the whole thing. Final shot of the show would be reaction shots: Spock would have an eyebrow raised, Bones would look condescending, Scotty would look faintly incredulous, and Kirk, seeing their reaction, would look smug yet sheepish as he realized everyone heard him make the log entry... fade to black, music and credits.

I guess that's one thing we easily forget: we often don't need LOTS of detail just to set up a suspenseful mood.

Don't get it to "roll over", though. Not now... that'd just piss off Sulu as he madly adjusts the thrusters!

Phaeton99 [2012-05-15 16:06:14 +0000 UTC]

Now this is a scene I could certainly see a TOS episode built around!

"Captain's Log, supplemental: Shields, warp drive and impulse have been rendered inoperative. Under thrusters only, thanks to the superb piloting skills of Mr. Sulu, the Enterprise has taken shelter from the intense solar emissions in the shadow of small, previously-charted, ferrite asteroid. Chief Engineer Scott reports that repair of the damage caused by the sun's unexpected ion flares will require no less than ten hours. Power reserves and life support have been estimated to last only eight. Effects of the radiation seeping through our shelter may incapacity the crew within six. I can only hope that fortune will favor us. Kirk out"

RobCaswell In reply to Phaeton99 [2012-05-15 17:34:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, with Trek shields you can take a lot of space's dangers for granted. But take them off the table and suddenly you have an adventure!

Thomas-Peters [2012-05-15 16:05:24 +0000 UTC]

The fragility and peril of the Enterprise is caught with the dynamic composition; she looks like she's cowering behind that rock! The image brings the desperation and panic of Arthur C. Clarke's short story "Summertime on Icarus" to mind. The details of the star's granularity, and the sunspots add a great level of detail. I think I'll go stand in front of the open refrigerator, now...
