Description Wow - it's been soooooo long since I posted anything!

I haven't had much time to devote to my artwork over the last months until recently - but I have tried my hand at a couple of new (to me) programs while I've been away.

One of those programs is Autodesk's Sketchbook Pro (for Galaxy) after buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition (ridiculous name!). It came bundled with the machine and I really like it - this picture is created almost entirely as a fairly quick sketch on the tablet.  There's a new version of Sketchbook available now - and I haven't tried it but I think it's fair to say the reviews seem pretty mixed - which is a shame because I really think the version I've used is almost perfect for 'sketching' (as its name would suggest).

The last thing I posted, many months ago, was a Copic Marker sketch of Captain Britain - so I thought there'd be a kind of 'symmetry' in doing another picture of him to mark my return to posting artwork.

This is only the first of many pieces I'll be putting up very soon... I have done some other work I'm really, really excited to share and keen to hear views on - so please check that out too and let me know what you think!

This is an original depiction of Captain Britain in a costume designed by Alan Davis. The character is copyright property of Marvel.

Yes of course - I'm delighted to hear you like it Darren.  He's one of my all-time favourite characters - and that's why I often draw him just as a kind of 'warm up' sketch (like this one).
As long as you mention that I drew it I think it would be great if you use it!

Hmmm.  In many ways Captain Britain was a lot to do with me getting hooked on comics (again).  I still remember going in to the newsagent and seeing Alan Davis's amazing Captain Britain monthly and falling in love with his style immediately.  That was the one that got me hooked. I'd seen the previous versions which, I think, appeared alongside Hulk or Spider-man weekly reprints (haven't checked the history but you'll no doubt know better than me) but never really connected with that version. I think it was probably a lot to do with the lion on the chest (which seemed of variable quality - no doubt because of the complexity of having to repeatedly draw a lion on a man's chest!) - but also because of that very dull lower half of the mask.  This later version was so much more eye-catching it's been one of my favourite costumes ever since.

Oh yes - totally agree!  I was a marginal fan when he was in 'Hulk Comic' but the 'Davis Default' version is so distinct, really one of the greatest designs...no wonder Marvel keep returning Brian Braddock to it.

Thanks E.  I don't tend to do much old school line drawing any more - but this is essentially my 'style' beneath all the flash of the digital paint.  I don't have the kind of cash needed to buy a Wacom Cintiq - but I did this with a Samsung Galaxy Note tablet - and I have to say it was a helluva lot like doing a 'real' drawing.  But because you can draw on different layers - I didn't even have to worry about erasing my 'pencils' - and I saved a bundle on white-out! lol

everyone keeps telling me digital is easier. i like to keep it old school, but maybe i just like to be a hold out lol. get on instagram, i just started and it's been really great.

I don't know if I'd say digital is 'easier' - I take a lot longer over a digital piece because I think the temptation is always there to work and rework it and go in at too high a magnification which the viewer won't even see.  But I do like it for the 'development' process - I prefer to do thumbnails digitally because you can scrap them or erase more mistakes quicker before deciding on the final layout.

Will follow the hint about instagram and see you there!

One of my fave Marvel super-hero designs.

Mine too - it's a shame they keep messing around with it in the comics. I think it might be because only Alan Davis can draw it 'right'.
