Description More glorious Snake Eyes and Helix fight scenes. 26 was a fun issue to do, but again a whirl wind to try and get done in time. I did these 22 pages in just under 3 weeks. I wish I could have filled out the backgrounds better. I had to just do enough to sell the environments and move on. Also at times things get stiff for me when I have to rush. Hands and wonky faces are usually the result. Still working on that short hand when Im up against the wall. Knowing where to cut corners and make it not look like it. And also allowing to spend the proper time on the structure of my figures and less time on the needless rendering details instead of the other way around.

Still, It got me excited for the upcoming SnakeEyes series I will be doing this spring. I like the combination of how these two fight together.

This issue just came out this last wed. check it out if you get the chance. Just one more issue till the end of the first season of IDW's JOE run.

For some reason... I think Helix followed a few different career paths before finally settling on ninja. Ballerina and Stunt-woman come to mind.

Awesome page. Love panel 1 in particular, the slight offset to the angles in all the panels. Great stuff.

Great action!!!! Love it!! Great Gi Joe times.... Well, please, can you say something? That little crosses markings in the draw, what's the purpose? It's for the final art, but why? Once, I've heard that is to "mark the blacks", is this right?

Yeah whenever you have areas that will be filled in with a solid black a penciler can mark and "X" in that space as a note to the inker to fill it in. Its a time saver, but also if you are inking over the original pencils, its easier to ink over the bare paper instead of a layer of graphite from the pencil. So that is a benefit for both reasons. I dont mark out every black because sometimes Im working that out on the page as I go, but if I have a large area that I know for sure will be all black, I use this method.

If you are in space you can mark the area "BWS" that means black and white with stars. THe inker knows to fill it in black and do a white out splatter effect to show a star field. There are a few tips and tricks like this in the industry. Mostly all to save time for the creators.

Yeah, the crosses are to let the inker know where to put the full blacks

Thanks for the info!!! And other noob question: what's the difference between the blacks of characters' shadows (like those in Snake Eyes uniform) and the full blacks? They aren't all full blacks anyway? Thanks again for any info.

Well the black are really there to guide the colourist or viewer as to the darkest shadowed area's or used for artistic effect in shaping things. Snake Eyes has a kind of dull grey/navy colour (I dont go for the black suit as its just too dull for me... even if he was fully black, they'd leave spaces for the colourist to add lighting to the characters)
