critique?
the positive is the idea: the sky enough interesting, the ocean, the cliff and romans.

the negative are the proportions. This is a typical issue. This issue born because many people want use landscape + subject portrait!! Potrait because they want show the details of the beautiful subject/s.
To create a portrait of those romains...and so using the proportions used in this work, is impossible do this using this enviroment -------> piratelotus-stock.deviantart.com/art/Hadrian-s-Wall-18-268255836
This concept is really complex and my english really bad!!
There are some simple and basic rules to calculate a good proportion here.....and if you try to use those rules, you'll see the real proportions of those romans.......well they will be little ants...but in this case rules are useless because
if you pay attention there is a ladder above the cliff and this tell us their real proportions -----> see the ladder----> piratelotus-stock.deviantart.com/art/Hadrian-s-Wall-18-268255836
I had created 3 tutorials about proportions relative manipulations......this because there aren't complete tutorials about proportions relative manip. There are tons tutorials about proportions relative drawing.....these rules of these 2 worlds are completely differents! for your fun and personal use and if you are interested you can read them. Well one my friend used them really excellent here, his work -----> archityran.deviantart.com/art/…

To conclude in general when the landscape and nature dominate on the subject/s this will enhance the feeling of magnificence. In this work is even possible expand the landscape on the left to add some battle ship......like the movie "300"

I think I understand what you are saying. In this piece the piece of land on which they are standing is not a huge cliff, rather a smaller piece of rocky ground at the oceans edge. Evan the foam in the water is closer and larger. But I do like your tutorials on perspective. They are informative and concise. I thank you for your input and will endeavor to learn more with patience and practice!

Yes...but these tricks don't works. Why? Simply because  at the end of the story  the final goal of these works is the global vision. In this specific work, we don't have many reference points. We have only the cliff + romans!
If you reduce the size of that cliff and use subjects with + or - the same size of this cliff, you are going even to create a visual anomaly!! indeed the size of the rocks is small and this  further emphasizes the problem.
When i had opened this work....i saw immediately this issue.....and this without see the original image of the cliff!
for this reason ocean and waves are not enough to fix this delicate and complex issue.

The way to fix this, it is that to change the structure of the composition and of course we can do this using some other image or images suitable to create like in this case a semi-portrait. Yes there aren't secrets or tricks....but it necessary, you know, only acquire good, the concept relative to the right choose of the right image! in this following example piratelotus-stock.deviantart.c… i see immediately the perfect candidate for some semi-portrait. This because the distance between the photographer and those rocks is minimum and so perfect to create a semi-portrait.

Expert in drawings or mattepainters help us poor manipulators to understand these concepts.
In this following example ----> tyleredlinart.deviantart.com/a… if you want create a semi-portrait or portrait.......you absolutely can't do this because the structure and cut is "wide landscape" ! the cut is an aspect really important......probably one of the most importants! If i want create a semi-portrait or portrait i can't absolutely use the previous structure......but i must use something like the example structure of this example -----> flaviobolla.deviantart.com/art…

Last example ------> Check the cut and proportion of this work --------> flaviobolla.deviantart.com/art… as you see the magnificence of the nature dominate the poor human and his beast!

About those tutorials, i didn't discovered nothing!! I had only studied basic concepts.....but my work, a titanic work has been that to convert those concepts for we photomanipulators....indeed horizon line and vanishing points works completely differently in drawing. To do this conversion i had request the help of expert people in drawing...try to imagine, do the question and wait the answer! Well they had sent me even many visual examples because this topic is really hard because hide 1 ton of issues! At the end i had reasumed all those informations and shared here on Deviant...as always for fun.

Patience and practice are two powerful allies

have a great day Robert
