Description I have photographed this couple of Harlequin ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) for 3 years now, and this is the first time I see some ducklings. I was so happy, despite of the poor light of july at noon.

How can a week old ducklings can swim in the those rapids ? I have seen them swimming in the turbulent waters without any problem. I just wanted to see that because they seemed so tiny for me to resist the strong current of this mountainous river.

The male, which has rich beautiful colours ([link] ), has gone back to the see shore to molt and will come back to the river next year by the end of may.

Now I see that the mother teaches her young about this form of safety too. The little ones must be strong, though possibly they struggle to get to the rock and possibly some have to try again and again. If you are ever lucky enough to see them actually "getting there " it would be good to know how they do it and how the swim, in those rapids, is for them.

A beautiful photograph.

Nature never ceases to amaze me. I've been watching a robin that built a nest on my deck and the way they look after their young is just amazing to me.

Glad you got to see these babies!
