OMG! I drew a dragon!

I'm very proud of this picture, because I've drawn about five dragons, and all of them stunk. Somebody even mistook one of them for a deer. oO; That's when you know you didn't do a very good job. But now, after reading all the way through 'Dragon Rider' and partly through 'A Gift of Dragons', I was inspired.

I tried to keep the lineart simple, because I wanted most of the detail to be through the coloring. It was originally going to be a lineless drawing, but after looking at my sketch lines, I knew my colored pencils wouldn't be able to cover them up. So I inked it. This sort of depicts my favorite dragon interpretation. I also have elemental dragons, but I simply adore the type I drew here. Their scales are like smooth, polished diamonds, and their eye colors range from crystal blue to jet black.

The underbelly I didn't know what to do with, so I did the traditional ridges with some yellows and oragnes sort of to depict the firey core of the dragon showing through the skin. The eyes took a while, because I was looking for a certain look that I didn't acheive until I'd worked a bit on it. I had drawn a pheonix eye before, and I did the pupil rather large, which gave it a sort of dream-like look to it. However, I wanted the dragon's eyes to looksharp and intelligent, so I made the pupil small. I must say, it worked pretty well. :3

The background was meant to have a smokey look to it, since dragons are fire-breathers. It took a good long thinging time before I came up with what I was going to do with the background. I've had several good pictures ruined by a crappy bc, and I didn't want all the work on my little dragon hatchling to go to waste. So, I finally came to this. The last thing I did was take some white acrylic and paint in some highlights in the eye. I usually do mulitple highlights to give a mythical look, because there's usually only one lightsource, the sun. I also did some spots along the scales.

I think I should give this little guy a name. :3 OMG, I love him so much.
