You know, I've firsthand seen this ship on an officially popular level.
Not hating it, but I am curious:
What's the appeal with this ship in particular?

I first heard of this ship almost two years ago and when I did, I didn't really get it, either. I was like, eh, they're kind of cute, but what's the genuine reason why people ship it? Is there one? Over time, I revisited this ship and slowly started to pick out certain things about both characters and eventually realized a reason to support this ship.
I can't speak for everyone, but for me, the reason I like Jim and Ariel is because they're both rebellious teenagers who are unsatisfied with their life and stuck in this rut where they want something more, but have yet to achieve what will give them a better life. And they're surrounded by people who don't understand how they feel. Because of this, they're constantly in trouble with their parents, too. Not to mention, they're both missing a parent, which affected both of their lives (Jim was heavily affected by his father's leaving the family and until Ariel was 14 or 15, she lived in a kingdom lacking joy and music due to Triton's anguish over his wife's death). Now, a common argument people bring up is that Ariel is too cheerful and would annoy Jim. But I don't really believe that. Yes, in comparison to Jim's moody, loner persona, Ariel is much more lively. However, she was pretty dramatic in The Little Mermaid, with a biting attitude toward those who didn't understand her. Such as the way she spoke to her father about humans as well as when Sebastian got her in trouble. Not to mention, Ariel's more happy persona would be a great balance to Jim,Β she'd be a good influence on him, you know, just adding a spark of joy to his life. And Jim's grounded personality would cause Ariel to lose her naivete. They just have certain things about themselves, that would work well with the other, play off of each other's character well. Add more to what we saw in the movies, especially in Ariel's case.
In my opinion, Eric does nothing for Ariel's character, but like someone mentioned in one of the comments below, Jim would add a lot more depth to Ariel. I personally like to imagine them meeting by accident at some point and becoming secret friends, sharing their worlds with each other and learning from one another, as well. Then slowly falling in love. To me, this also adds so much more meaning to Part of Your World (Reprise) and the deleted song One Dance. The idea of Ariel makingΒ a true friend of a human, falling forΒ him and wanting with all her heart to be with him in his world. As opposed to spying a cute guy, saving his life and then suddenly wanted her whole world to revolve around him. :/ Not to mention, that bit when she was defending Eric from Triton, saying "You don't even know him! Daddy, I love him!" It makes a lot more sense if those words wereΒ in the context of someone she really knew, not a guy she's not even really met (she'd never even really spoken to Eric at the point in time, just sang to his half-conscious form). And lastly, after Ariel marries Eric, she seems to lose the spunky, zealous personality she had originally. She's put in a stifling, domestic position as the prince's wife. I like to imagine that with Jim, she could still be just as adventurous as the moment we first see her.
So, yeah, I put a lot of thought into this pairing, lol. That's the appeal I find in it, hopefully, you kind of get what shippers see in it now.

All I can say is...AMEN! And yes- Eric isn't good enough. He's nice, don't get me wrong and he's kinda cute- i guess...but he lacks real character, he lacks real personality and spunk which is fine if you plan on marrying someone as bland as yourself, but we are talking about Ariel- THE most rebellious and spunky girl in the Disney universe, just sayin. lol.

Thanks, I like you too- especially your art and the fact that we both could care less for Eric and we agree that Ariel's last name should be Hawkins.

Meh, screw Eric. He's not even an interesting character anyways. Jim's got 3-dimensional writing behind him and I'm pretty sure he'd accept Ariel for who she actually is.
JIMIEL FTW!!!
