Description This jolly fellow is engaged in an activity I would likely refer to as frolicking. Or possibly prancing.

Not at all, really. I gave a better look at your gallery and searched your blog, I saw some amazing stuff here! This recent post with all sort of portraits was real good.

This really makes me laugh to see this wonderful creation. Also based on this sculpture and my roommate's drawings I'm fairly certain you two would get along.

Prancing sounds perfect. :3

How large is he?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoboChandler In reply to HugsLee13 [2011-03-22 04:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 24 inches tall

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HugsLee13 In reply to RoboChandler [2011-03-23 00:09:20 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's really tall for such spindly legs. Is there some sort of armature or reinforcement?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoboChandler In reply to HugsLee13 [2011-03-24 02:34:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes, serious business is under that clay I can't remember exactly how thick it is at the moment but I think 1/4" threaded steel rod running up the two legs that are on the ground. The rods are bolted to the board, bent with a torch and welded together. The rod fro his back right leg also runs out to the end of his front right etc. Sculpey is pretty much incapable of supporting it's own weight unless you work very small, so, well, yeah.

xdeathbybananax [2011-03-22 03:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Sculpey as in you made this fellow out of clay???
Incredible. Also, he looks friendly, happy, and adorable

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoboChandler In reply to xdeathbybananax [2011-03-22 04:28:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! Sculpey is an oven-bake polymer clay, it's pretty good business if you're willing to build the proper support for it

and thanks for the liking words!

My pleasure. He looks like a to-scale model for some movie! You know how they make the scale replicas, it looks like one of those!

RoboChandler In reply to Mxzylpt [2011-03-22 02:13:15 +0000 UTC]

if it's any consolation, this guy has welded steel in him, bolted down to that board he's on.

He's mark II. Mark I was built out of rebar wire, and after a tremendous number of hours of work, wouldn't stand up in the oven and had to be scrapped :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mxzylpt In reply to RoboChandler [2011-03-22 04:06:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow welded steel? Damn. Very nice. How do you get such smooth straight lines?

Don't you hate when you have to scrap work after spending so much time on it? It's how you learn obviously, but that doesn't make it an easy pill to swallow.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoboChandler In reply to Mxzylpt [2011-03-22 04:19:46 +0000 UTC]

It really depends. I like to do as much of it with my hand and tools as possible. A nicely shaped tool and a steady hand (you can roll something like the one in the center here [link] ), or if the surface allows using the palm of my hand or my finger to kind of buff/burnish the surface. X-acto knives are also pretty excellent, either to cut in sharp shapes or to smooth with the edge of the blade (if your hand is up to it). Also very fond of certain etching tools.

That said, a lot of people like to brush on solvent or mineral spirits to smooth it out at the end.

Yeah, throwing that thing out was rough. oof yeah.
