Description Oil, 12 x16 inches

Now that the new edition of the Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook has been released I can begin to show the illustrations that I created for it. This tavern scene features a halfling bard (or for those who aren't familiar with the game, a hobbit-like minstrel) dancing and playing lute for a host of other mythical peoples. It was great fun to paint and I'm honored to be included in such an iconic publication that I hope will bring enchantment and wonder to many people, young and not so young.

If you happen to follow my work, you may remember my announcement back in March of this year that I was lucky enough to have four paintings included in Spectrum 21: The Annual Best of Fantastic Art. At the time I was unable to display one of those four images because it was under a non-disclosure agreement until it was published. Well, I'm happy to say this is the fourth image that will be appearing in this year's edition of Spectrum

Love 5th Edition, my favorite Character was a Gnome Bard called Gimbe Knackle Stringbender Namfoodle Doublelock Onceshoe, and he is a god!
I know your Gnomes got some criticism, but I however, love them. Keep up the good work

Hmmm..  Lovely work.  Out of curiosity:  what's with the uber-evil-looking ram skull in the back?

It's a dragon skull from the D&D universe. The kind of thing you might expect a tavern in that world to put up over their fireplace.

Love the pic, did you intentionally give the halflings a somewhat Asian look?

Hello !

I'm working on free, non-commercial, amateur and totally reusable role playing game (an adaptation of Pathfinder to an OGL system - EW system). I would like to use your art to illustrate an archetype (tavern bard), can I ?

Sorry for my bad English,
Thank you very much !

Really love your work in the Player's Handbook. I wish wotc allowed the paintings to show the artists' signatures. With the older d&d books, that helped to establish a fanbase for the artists.

This is excellent. I love the almost pastel feel it has to it. I would never know it was oil. I have this image of ideal paintings in my head and this is it.

His feet seem disproportionate in size to the rest of his body... that, or his head's too big.

Yeah, he's a "halfling." Like a hobbit, but with small hands and feet.

MrParaduo In reply to robrey [2014-09-02 21:36:34 +0000 UTC]

I know he's a halfling. That's what's bothering me. Even if he's a halfling, he shouldn't look like his feet have shrunk further than he has. It's like he shrank half, then his appendages shrank another half without him.

The description I was given to work from specifically says that they have small hands and feet. I take that to mean that their hands and feet should be smaller than what would normally be considered proportional to their bodies. But let me know if you find reference elsewhere that that is not correct.

This is one of the images I was given as an example: conceptopolis.deviantart.com/a…
