oh i do admit, he is very, very complex and intriguing what all his life did, and i admit he was brave for what he did.

but he was still not a very nice person at all.

(and i guess i'm a little jumpy- because of the sudden explosion of snape love courtesy of the movie (which i loved the movie- and the snape scenes were great- but they took All his bad traits and what caused him to become a DE in the first place and turned him into this heartbroken tragic anti-hero while james is made to just be the jerk who "stole" lily from him. so all the old/ and new snape fans are all going "oh snape Deserved Lilly better! Lily should have stayed with snape-James is a jerk!"

and it makes my blood boil because Lily Made Her choice for a very good reason- but noooo to the snape fans Snape is not someone who called her a Mudblood and wanting mudbloods and muggles to die except her because he was in love with her, etc- snape is this "poor saint" who should have been the one.

*barfs*

on a more positive note, I reiterate-you draw Tonks really pretty/badass even while depressed.

Both James and Severus are human with good and bad qualities. These qualities are shown, or not shown, in very different ways, though. James comes off as open and able to be loved and adored. A very Griffindor trait. Snape hides much of himself inside and refuses to connect with others, very Slytherin. Many are willing, in light of pretty Griffindor, to overlook James's lesser qualities. Snape makes bad decisions worse with his tendency to hide himself away and not take help to make things better. Neither is a saint by any stretch and their inherent personalities are bound to clash and highlight the worst in each other.

For myself, I just never could relate to James. That's why I was always more interested in Snape. Whether I liked or disliked him, I found him more interesting and complex.

Just my two pence.

fair enough point, which I can agree.

My problem was when one or the other is Overly Idolized and "can do no wrong" while the other is Vilified beyond acceptable, and given no look at his Good qualities.

I don't like Snape, but I can accept he did good, and it took guts to be a double agent and be able to deal with 95% of the people on the good side thinking him evil.

but recently, thanks to the last movie and rickman's great performance, James is Generalized as A. An unredeming Bully, who B. "stole" lily from snape (which as a subject of it's own it also infuriates me because Lily is her own person, based on the qualities of Both men She made a Choice of Whom She considered the better man to be with and marry.) she's no "prize" that was "rightfully/ owned" by Either of. So the whole "James Stole Lily from Snape!" "Snape is SO Much better for her because of this and that!" "Snape should have been harry's father"
not only undermines lily's own agency, but also Completely and blatantly "rose tints" the uglier traits of Snape which are in the book, but Because the movie did not included, new fans of snape think him this woobly, innocent, saint who was better than james.

I have absolutely no issue of whom one likes best or not (ironically, I don't identify with younger James much- I was not popular not that sporty- but I can identify the Fierce, Fierce loyalty he had for his friends and family- and for not going to the dark side- and overcomming his "school bully" attitude. it's not like James is my absolute favorite character, but he is who he is, flaws and all and he did do incredible things for his friends, and he loved his wife and son- so for the snape fans villify him and take credit away from him as a better husband/father in favor of snape- because the movie was bias IS what angers me.

but thanks for being open minded.

I think you and I are in total agreement. I'm glad you read what I wrote as I meant it, not as an attack. The way I see it, Snape chose to follow the Dark Lord over his friendship with Lilly. He wanted both but, understandably, Lilly would have none of dark magic. Had he not gone that route, she would have at least remained his friend. It was his choices and hers that pulled them apart, not so much James at all. James was just there, representing everything good and opposite of the route Snape had chosen. He too needed to mature, and he did so and was a good and loving husband/father. Snape had to go through hell before he found the better path again and even then he never lost the taint. "Once you start down the dark side, forever will it dominate your destiny.", to quote Yoda. Snape, though, I think accepted this as the consequence of his past. And that acceptance, and continuance to do the right thing despite these consequences and permanent taints, is what I find noble and admirable in him.

His nastyness towards everyone I think was a bit of a catch 22. He had to maintain the exterior to cover himself as Voldemort's spy. That exterior caused folks to treat him in a certain way, which made it easier to reject those people and be nasty of his own accord. Kind of a loop that he both couldn't (spy) and wouldn't (personality, pride) break out of. That loop is his tragedy, but often a person's tragedy is of their own making so it's quite appropriate.

Thanks for putting up with this rambling!

James IS a jerk with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, lol, and while Severus wasn't perfect, he did risk all for her, so his later actions redeem him.

how about standing for Remus when he showed up to Hogwarts, and he realized he was a werewolf, and instead of shunning him like everyone else, Him (James), Sirius and Peter risked Expulsion, getting sent to jail and other things by learning to become animagus to help Remus when he was a werewolf, so he wouldn't be dangerous to others?

or taking in Sirius into his own house, when he ran away from home?

No reedeeming qualities MY ASS.

also on snape Three words= Bullying Poor Neville.

I dont have anything else to say to you and please dont talk to me again.

You think the silver doe is weak? I don't. Being female doesn't make it weak.

Since all of Tonks's magic was being screwed up by a bad love affair, it's entirely possible her patronus was not up to her usual standards. It's hardly kind of Severus to say so, but when has Severus ever been kind?

I read one fanfic which modified this scene by having Snape say he "liked the platypus better." I love the idea of Tonks with a platypus patronus! So much better than a boring old wolf.

Of course itΒ΄s not weak. IΒ΄m the last person making fun of females, being one myself.
I rather find it ironic that he sneers at Tonks for leting her feelings affect her magic as if he himself is any better off. But thatΒ΄s Severus-Master-of-Ignoring-The-Obvious.

I understand now. Good point. I was just missing it.

Sev's magic was never weakened by his unrequited love for Lily, but we don't know that Tonks's patronus was weakened (though her metamorphmagus abilities were) or if Severus was just being snide. Probably the latter.

In Snape's experience with the Marauders, Remus WAS a weakling, but that isn't the way Tonks knew him (until he tried to dump her in Book Seven). She saw him as strong and wonderful.

I wonder what his patronus would have been if he had never met Lily in his life..probably a snake^^

My preference is a panther, though a raven or crow would also do well. Nothing wrong with a snake, either.

I imagine he wouldn't have even had a patronus... JK says he's the only Death Eater who can produce one and that is only because of the positive, redeeming impact she had on him. WIthout Lily he would've simply been a regular Death Eater with no use for a patronus, like the others... just my two cents.

Yeah... but a crow would fit even better I think... You know... black, kind of ugly, bad omen, always watching you...
