Description This whole project began during my first year of art school. My idea was to make a garment out of filmstrips, preferable something one might wear to a photo-worthy occasion, to play on the idea of the public gaze, how it effects the person who is the object of the gaze, and how this applies in particular to girls and women. The transparencey of the material, to me, suggested vulnerability, the feeling of being stripped naked by other people's scrutiny and critisism. The sharpness and inflexibility of film made me think of the expectations implied in the gaze, the way one feels obligated to pose one's self to fit these expectations. The dress, in effect, is the general public gaze - uncomfortable and inflexible, allowing the person who may be the object of the gaze very little privacy.
Though I didn't quite pull it off on the first try, my second try was a lot more fun, especially once I'd procurred a dress form . My heartfelt thanks to , Betty, John, and Rebecca !! This would not have been possible without your generous donations and support .......

Additional: The far left pic is of , who modelled the dress for me at the NSCAD Wearable Art Show ! Thanks again! Oh, and the picture was taken by a very talented peer of mine at NSCAD, Crystal Cox. I hope she doesn't mind my using her name, but I can't just not give credit. Here's a link to the wearable art show site, for the curious: [link]

Materials: Camera film (colour + black&white), black zipper, and mettallic gold-coloured elastic.

Ah, thankyou! This is something I truly enjoy about artmaking - being able to use stuff that just kind of accumulates, but that one doesn't quite want to throw away.....

I like the dress a lot. It's made from something that normally isn't considered clothing, and looks pretty cool.
Again, you have a very one-sided sort of thing going on with the symbolism - which has a very feminine, negative, all-about-expectations feel to it.

RobynTheArtRat In reply to vampirebox [2006-02-20 00:37:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like this one.
Again, you make an interesting point. While I think these concepts are still deserving of attention, I appreciate the need for more positive messages. Do you think the symbolism here could be used in a different way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vampirebox In reply to RobynTheArtRat [2006-02-20 02:28:34 +0000 UTC]

It could be...
For instance, being glad to be able to bare yourself. Being so comfortable that you allow yourself that freedom. As far as being confined, it could be that it's a symbol for society's views. And although the film is strong, one is still able to climb out of the dress and be free.

That make sense?

By the way, I enjoy symbolism, even if it's about something I don't particularly agree with.

It also looks like a bondage dress. Women (especially young women) are slaves to fashion and the media...

Heeeeeeeeeeey Steph !! Remember when you sent me this comment? Well, I know you're probably very busy, but it happens that the annual NSCAD wearable art show is coming up (Sunday April 8th), and should I want to enter my filmdress, I'm going to need a model for it. The dress, it turns out, is a little bit too small for me, so I was wondering if you might in fact be interested in a modeling job. If you are, let me know and we can work out the details.
Oh, and thanks for your comment !

I am interested! it would just depend on the time. (is it saturday/sunday? the 8th is saturday) because i've got this lifeteen comitment (I think) that starts around 7 and I can't get out of it :S but there's a chance it'll be pushed ahead a week. anyway, I am interested!
