Description You know when you look back at a painting and you're like "wow that's bad"

That's this one

And what's "wow that's bad" about it, is that, compared to where I am with my painting, and even where I was at the time, it was like suddenly I fell into something five years earlier.
But that happens, I guess.  What's different about me now, is that I finished it, even though I hated it.  And then I re-tackled the idea behind it.
The differences in this one lie in that I did studies for the people, I used references for the lighting and I got feedback as I went.
There are still things that I'm not happy about, mostly the faces though.  Everything else isn't too bad, and I look forward to doing better.

This was actually done four months ago.  So a bit about it:
"The White Whale is a remnant of the First Cataclysm, a hundred or so years after the first human settlers arrived in Tern. This scene (is loosely inspired by the Pieta) depicts Taner and the King of Orul in the Second Age (post Second Cataclysm).
Taner's strong connection to the Source has protected him as he attempts to deter the pale beast. Protected him from what?
The stories told that to look into the eye of the White Whale was to look into a void, and that upon seeing what lay inside that void, you soul would be drawn from your body and into it. This happened to the King, and he was king no more, only a breathing husk in human form remained.
And, although he could not save the King, Taner was heralded as a hero, and he became the first lord mage or Orul.
This would be a painting done by a Third Age artist, trying to depict the dramatic encounter in oils."

There hasn't been much new painted in my world recently, just one big thing, but I'll put that up in a couple of weeks.

Sweet! The ichor creeping out of the eye socket is kinda cool. RIP the King :/

Kudos for finishing it, I know how much of an earache it can be to go back to work on an unfinished painting from however many years ago.
Are there other pale beasts? Of the earth and sky perhaps?

If you look close enough you can see *things* inside the eye too. Depends on screen gamma.

There are indeed other pale beasts. An assortment of corrupted ideas and creatures. I'm still building the lore around them but I have a better idea of where they're going

I'm intrigued by the concept of Corrupted Ideas. Thinking about something in just the right (or wrong) way too much until it becomes hooked into your mind, twisting your thoughts into knots, driving you to obsession. Not killing you, but warping your mind, heart, and soul into something strange and radically different than who you were.

Yeah... I've been there.

That ties in strongly with how I'm running this world.
I'm still doing a lot of building, but before humans came, the world was dominated by creatures that humans came to call spirits.  They are a different type of lifeform and exist in a more fluid manner.  After humans had lived there and the world had, in curiosity and through influence, taken on the shapes of their home, you have both spirits who are tree spirits, and spirits who are more the concept of a forest.

The corruption comes from outside though, and is partially a mechanic that lets me just do some good old monster-supernatural horror, and partially something that I want to use to symbolise psychological symbolism.  Anyway.  I'm having fun with it.  I'm going to try to use inktober to draw out some more things for it.

You said you'd been there, what have you thought about this with?  A personal project?

Ah, I like it, sort of like a more eldritch take on the fair folk.

Heh, I wish I had personal projects. I meant I'd been there in terms of being obsessed with certain thoughts or ideas that seemed to eclipse all other rational thinking and left me noticeably different by the time I finally got a grip. I imagine it's a thing plenty of people go through, maybe more subtly over time.
Now in a fantasy setting where this is brought about by crazy outsider spirits, it'd probably be like having your brain twisted into knots and dipped into ink to make pretty nightmare tie-dye~

I mean, sort of!  I will be drawing on a lot of lore from around the world to make my spirits.

Consider journalling about your ideas.  Sometimes that's the key to getting out of their grip, is making them tangible and properly thought about.  Mind maps, little doodles, dot points, whatever.
I think part of how I get out of those sorts of cycles is that I try to apply the ideas to my worlds, and some work, some don't.  But ultimately, I end up fleshing my world out more.

Well, I do get to touch on different types of madness :^D because if there's one good way to stop stupid power escalations, its to have the power destroy!!

A terrible idea just occurred to me; the other pale beasts should be the Pale Quail and the Pale Snail
