Perhaps the trees live so long because they have no idea how long they've been around.I stood with my wine glass and cigarette staring into the night as I heard the sound of fireworks, I wondered if the giant tree before me knew it was new years. There is nothing different from 11:59 to 12:00 yet we feel like it's a world away, because we judge many things in time, and we keep track of time in years.
I sat hugging a pillow, watching a 4 month old baby sleeping during his dream-feed and I wondered if the baby knew it was a boy. There is nothing different from a boy baby and a girl baby yet we feel like we have to define them because we judge others in life, and we keep track of others by categorisation.
Perhaps we should forget what year it is, and what we areβ¦and just be.

Hi, I am critiquing this on the behalf of . I like this piece. I think it has a great message and idea of time and categorization really fascinates me personally. I think this piece is a good attempt at capturing that strangeness. I particularly the first line about the tree. I think it's a beautiful and poignant sentence and a great way to start the piece. I also love the last line and I feel it connects really well with the first paragraph.
My only criticism would be that the second paragraph with the baby does not gel with the rest of the poem. I have to admit that it kind of comes from nowhere and the idea is so different from your introductory idea, that it clashes. The first paragraph is about time and how we measure the passge of time when in all honest the only difference from one minute to the next minute is that we notice it. However, the paragraph about the baby is about categorizing gender and judging other people. Also there is one minor, but major different between baby boy and a baby girl. 
Again this si just my opinion, so feel free to ignore me. ^_^
Overall, I really liked this piece. Keep up the good work!

Hmm... this is certainly an interesting thought process. I think I agree; I think sometimes categorisation makes us feel safe because it makes things seem a little less unknown, but the unknown isn't a bad thing in itself and perhaps we shouldn't treat it like it is. Β Thanks for this, it has been very thought-provoking. I feel a little more free than I did before.Β Β

Great stuff, but the whole stuff about the 4-month baby confuses me; I can't see what it symbolizes and if its literal then it comes out of nowhere.

They're both observations, it symbolises the need to categorise and keep track of everything, to judge it all, make sense of it in order to understand. We focus on the differences when there are endless similarities. Gender is the more physical, aesthetic side, and the tree is about timeββthe intangible, ambiguous thing we put a name to and track, and let rule our lives.Β
The tree doesn't know the year, the baby doesn't know it's a boyβ¦they are doing perfectly fine, sometimes what you don't know is more important than what you do.Β
