Description

Bee blinked hard, her head swimming.

The world faded back into view. She saw her hands sprawled out before her, tiny figures scrambling at incalculable speed around her fingers. She watched a drop of blood slip from her nose and splat upon the concrete below. In another second a pair of minuscule blurs had appeared over it and swept it away. Her skull felt like it would burst and her whole body felt numb except for a faint uncomfortable tingle.

In time the world stopped spinning and the figures slowed to a comprehensible speed. People. Tiny people. No.

Normal people.

They were so busy, these tiny souls, each of them no taller than her middle finger. She saw one of them painting and polishing the nail of her pinky finger, making it identical to her nine others. Her face was crowned with cherry pickers, technicians meticulously dressing her flowing blonde hair. When she looked down past her nose she could see a pair of techs meticulously applying lipstick to her now-gigantic lips.

Her massive heart pounded rapidly in her chest, struggling to adapt to the miniature world she was now surrounded by. All memories of the endless paperwork and waivers had faded, leaving only pure animal panic in their wake. Then, just as she was about to scream in terror, she was awash in pleasure. Strange euphoria swept through every inch of her now titanic frame. Her brain bubbled with good feelings. She felt strong. Beautiful. Important. Impressive. Better. Self-conscious feelings that had secreted themselves in the back of her mind for years were suddenly a lifetime away.

A massive, honest smile beamed across her blushing face. Her glittering, ecstasy-soaked eyes met those of her tiny attendants. With a chuckle, the giant yogi passed all the way through the still-shimmering gate, drooping her backside to clear the top of the arch. Greeted with a chorus of claps and a gallery of staring investors, she stretched sultrily to her full height – the movements of her muscles filling her with near orgasmic delight. It felt as if she’d been frozen in place for a decade.

“Well!” she chirped, her summery voice booming like thunder through the cramped hangar. “Still in one piece, right?”

Her giggles shook the tiny souls at her feet down to their guts, but they could not help but chuckle along. The tension of the gate’s second use passed with a thousand relieved laughs.

Bee sauntered back into the hangar exhausted, her blinding white sneakers squeaking across the asphalt and concrete. She dabbed a massive towel to her brow even as she unknowingly drenched the deck below with vast pools of sweat. She did not notice the crews of custodians rushing with mops and buckets to mop up the strange tide she’d left in her wake. Her eyes were glued to the rafters before her.

On hundreds of televisions arrayed in a grand mosaic she could see viral footage of her improvised ‘Giant Yoga’ class, her name and hashtags now being parroted across the world. She smiled warmly as news crews interviewed awestruck witnesses. They wept as they described their encounter with her. The words ‘angel’ and ‘goddess’ were used with slightly less irony than usual. Their eyes glittered. She had shown them a whole new side of reality, just by her very presence. For the first time in her life she felt not only adequate, but truly incredible.

With a sizzle the array brought the anomaly gates back to life. The gate before her shimmered, reaching only as high as her waist. She placed her hands to her hips and stared down the shimmering, milky energy field contained within. Her heart sank.

At first she had been so wary about growing. She had a life at normal size, after all. Family. Friends. Favorite restaurants. She’d have lost all of that once she had feet the size of minivans.

And yet, here she was, ready to return to that life she cherished – and she hesitated.

“Miss Creel?” squawked a loudspeaker, “You can pass through the gate now. We can’t keep it open long so let’s get to it.”

She sighed and felt her face droop. Begrudgingly she slumped to all fours, sweeping aside forklifts and golf carts filled with staff. The tiny souls around her felt a strange sympathetic pain as they watched her crawl pitifully through. As they watched the soles of her shiny white sneakers pass into the energy field some even wept.

Hours later Bee emerged from the smaller gate in a heap. Curled into the fetal position she trembled for nearly thirty minutes before she responded to medical staff. When she came to her senses tears began to roll from her shimmering eyes. Though the medics bombarded her with a series of diagnostic questions, she only managed to repeat a single phrase for the rest of the night.

“Small…” she muttered through chattering teeth, “so…so small…”

I'm curious, at the end is she like, muttering and (seemingly? Idk) shaken because she's back to being small (compared to when she passed through the portal anyway) and feels vulnerable and insignificant and such again? Or because the realization of how small (and thus fragile/delicate and such) the people in that reality were and how easily she could've hurt em even if she didn't want to kinda like, retroactively was hitting her?
