Well, this is going to be a very hard model to explain. I don't want to tl;dr you guys in the deskrip, so I encourage you to read the included letter in the model file. In a nutshell, I had wanted to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Wannsee Conference in a somewhat-tasteful manner that wouldn't mask the truth of the Holocaust in any way. Hence, I came up with this model. Really, this model is meant for educational and documentary purposes only, I in no way encourage or promote Nazism, National Socialism, Antisemitism, or hate with this model. Nonetheless, I'm sure there's gonna be a bunch of flak coming my way once the usual blogs have posted this.

I testbuilt this model while watching The Pianist. Goddamnit was that hard...

Actually, what the photograph shows is a genuine gaswagen, a vehicle run on wood gas. Wood gas was a carbon monoxide rich gas produced by slow combustion of wet wood wood or charcoal, in a similar manner to the town gas piped to houses before natural gas came on stream. The cylinder you can see at the back is where the gas was produced.

It has never been alleged that this gas was used to murder people in vans or anywhere else. The alleged murder vans, none of which have ever been found, were almost all diesel-engined, which is an impossibility as diesel engine exhaust contains only minute amounts, well under 1%, of carbon monoxide, and is not toxic. Diesel engines are, and were in the 1940s, used underground in mines for this reason.

The vehicle you're thinking about are the Holzbrenner (lit. wood-burning [link] ) cars that Volkswagen and other companies produced to help solve the fuel shortage. The photograph (and the model based on it) are "Gaswagen", specifically, the one found in CheΕ‚mno. While it has never been substantially proven that the particular vehicle pictured was itself used for the gassing of camp inmates, it does match contemporary descriptions.

This is a Holzwagen. The generator unit can be seen clearly at the back

Yad Vashem claims to have only one picture of a gas van. It is a Magirus Deutz but not this picture. There is nothing in this photo to suggest it was a homicidal gas van. No actual gas van, as opposed to an alleged photo has ever been found. The allegations were first made at Soviet show trials in 1943. (After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian law courts began mass rehabilitation of former German soldiers who were convicted for alleged war crimes between 1941 and 1945.) The Russians revived these claims at Nuremberg.
What contemporary descriptions you are referring to? I know of none other than those obtained in the afore-mentioned trials, which the Russians themselves now consider to be show trials. The Soviets were desperate to prove atrocities against the Germans after the discovery by the Germans of the Soviet massacre of Polish officers at Katyn.

Sorry I can't edit what I wrote so I have to make a new post. There were statements describing gas vans in the 1960s and 1970s trials in Germany. There was no material evidence and limited and unreliable documentary evidence.

It should be illegal to make anything related to the Holocaust. It was such a horrible event in Human history.

Before the gas chambers, the Nazis used carbon monoxide (CO) in vans like these, which were equipped with a system that piped the CO into the passenger compartment. It was a slow (though painless) way to die, and sometimes tok hours for all the Jews to finally die.

Ultimately, they eventually decided CO was too slow and inefficient (and why waste valuable diesel on these Untermenschen anyway?) and they switched to the gas chambers.

Never forget.

History is just that. A lot of it is very sad and we don't like to think about it but it will not go away. So hopefully we learn from it one person at a time. I have never heard of the vehicle before either but then most of us could not imagine it.

pretty sad that such any decision such as the Final Solution could be passed by any human, but that's our twisted spirit. :/
