fractals are usually digitally generated art - most often abstract in pattern generated by a program such as apophysis by using numerical and mathematical values

lol kind of thats about the best way i can explain it though usually i just let the program do its own thing with a 'random batch' setting then save the images when i see shapes i could use

you can create fractal like patterns sure check out my 'digital abstracts' folder for some idea of the fractal like work i create using photoshop. also my fractal stock folder has some useful odds and ends in it if you want to download any of those and play with them.
or indeed if you want to download apophysis to try it out yourself i can give you a link

It's a cute little tedybear thing that has little bat wings and a antenna with a big ol' fuzzball on the tip! You should google search "moogle" to get a good idea of what it is.
