Day 59

"The scout up top says he can't see any infected in the city", Wolfgang tells me as he leans against the bannister, where I had made myself comfortable for the past few hours. "Just because he can't see any in the streets doesn't mean there aren't any in the buildings", I reply. "True enough", says Wolfgang. I look over to see Grand Marais begining to rise over the horizon. It looks no different than Copper Harbor honestly. A few more spaces for docking is the only immediate give away that the two cities are different.
Just before we make port, I check to make sure I have everything. Everything is accounted for, except for my gun is short two bullets. All of a sudden, I'm back at the house in Copper Harbor, the old woman leaning over her husband, crying his name...
"...chael...ichael...MICHAEL!!!" I come back out of my daze with Wolfgang shaking me. "What?!", I cry, knocking his hand off my shoulder. "We're in port. You weren't moving or anything. For a second I thought you went to sleep or something. Still no sign of "them" by the way." I look around and realize he's right. Almost all of the men are leaving the boat, weapons in hand and being given burlap sacks for carrying the food back. I hastily picked myself up and walked to the plank leading off the boat, grabbing an empty bag as I went.
As I walk towards the city from the docking yard, I notice how everything is quiet, and unmoving. There are no ducks quacking, a sound I had always associated with lakes and ponds, there are no birds singing in the trees, another sound I always paired with the wilderness. Looking back, I realized that there were never any animals when the infected were around. Back at the cabin, you could hear birds all the time, but when I went to go look for Weston and the others and returned to a crowd of infected, there was nothing. Just before the attack at Mason, the occasional bird flying over the walls of the city was never a surprise, but the night before there was nothing. Then it hit home. There were infected here in Grand Marais.
