Description

At the climax of the story, Nancy, as always, stays out of danger while the boys rush into the burning jewelry shop to try to catch the bad guy in the act (and they do get into quite an altercation, with fists and feet flailing and the risk of smoke inhalation and explosion growing with every second). In fact, Nancy is explicitly commanded by Frank to go and call the police and fire department, which she obediently rushes off to do. Calling the police was often a task relegated to the women in days gone by, so that the men could focus on fighting the bad guys. Nancy's playing that role to perfection here.

Even when she gets done with that and comes back, she doesn't rush into the store to help the boys with the fight. Instead, she stays outside and pitches in by opening up the air caps on the tires on the bad guys' van, letting air leak out. However, she realizes that the air isn't draining fast enough, so she jumps into the van and hides with the stolen jewelry so that she can track the bad guys to their lair when/if they get away from the boys and escape (which they do). That's what leads to the scene depicted here, when the villain realizes she's back there and tries to confront her. In a longer book this would probably result in a kidnapping scene for Nancy, but we don't have time for that in a short story, so the story ends immediately after this because the police surround the truck.

Special Note: Nancy actually goes shopping for fall school items during this story. So somehow or another, Nancy is a student here. Combine this with her inexplicably celebrating a birthday in another story in this collection, and it appears that Nancy is now a 19-year-old college student. Weird.
