His career came full circle starting in television with shows like Gunsmoke, Hawk and Dan August. His big break and fame catapulted in 1972 in the film Deliverance where city men were tested against the elements of a white water wilderness and the unsavory intentions of hill billy mountain men. Followed up with arguably the greatest sports film committed to celluloid with the Longest Yard. He was regarded as the biggest box office draw of the 70's with hits like Hooper, Smokey and the Bandit and the Cannonball Run. AS his film appeal began to wane he returned to the small screen with Evening Shade. In the 90's he got an Oscar nod for his performance in Boogey Nights, a film he was reluctant to positively acknowledge for a number of years. Sadly, he never got to mark the end of his career with a role in Tarantino's latest film. Oh, the possibilities.
