Description "THE RED BARON"

Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), widely known as the Red Baron, was a German fighter pilot with the Imperial German Army Air Service (LuftstreitkrΓ€fte) during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of that war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories, more than any other pilot.

Originally a cavalryman, Richthofen transferred to the Air Service in 1915, becoming one of the first members of Jasta 2 in 1916. He quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot, and during 1917 became leader of Jasta 11 and then the larger unit Jagdgeschwader 1 (better known as the "Flying Circus"). By 1918 he was regarded as a national hero in Germany, and was very well known by the other side.

Richthofen was shot down and killed near Amiens on 21 April 1918. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains very possibly the most widely known fighter pilot of all time

There is a cracking book that I have which examines the evidence of his last flight and it gives the credit of the shooting down of the Red Baron to a Sergeant named Popkin.
The book looked at the evidence and timings of the fight, from when he went after the young and inexperienced pilot called May, to the brief attack by Captain Brown and also when he came under fire from a machine gun group followed by Popkin shooting at him. It could not have been Brown as he attacked from the wrong side of the wound that killed Richtofen.

The book is called the Last Flight of the Red Baron, it has been out for many years now. There is a photo of Popkin in it.
It has a lot of reports in it too

From what I remember, wasn't it a Canadian pilot that shot him down (Roy brown I believe his name was )

It's unknown it could have been Roy brown or an Australian machine gunner with a browning on the ground

According to RAF files it looks like Manfred could of shot down more than 80, it's looking around 90 or even 100, but this is a ever ongoing investigation.

He was flying against Sopwith Camels when he died, I don't believe the Fokker Triplane ever flew with the Maltese Cross and his plane did not burn, it landed intact. But I do love your work very much and I'm sure it is difficult to make sure everything is perfect.

Last I heard (from the History Channel, no less) they figured it was a gunner on the ground named Snowey Evans (or something like that) who delivered the shot that pierced his chest from below. They mentioned they couldn't even find a picture of the guy...

I'm not sure how you do your images, but you could change the Baron's DR.I out for Voss and the SE5's would fit (with marking changes on the one).

A very well done piece, but wasn't he flying an albatross when he died? I could be wrong.

Manfred was badly injured on his head while flying an Albatross fighter, before moving on to the triplane. Probably that was what you were referring to

I like it. It's a shame the RAF pilots are so neglected, though.
