Not lagged behind, so much as in the wrong direction---too many high tech, gee-whiz, overpriced gadgets that never work as advertised.
A guy with a phaser in hand can still be taken out by a huge spear in the back (I am such a Trek nerd).

Besides the Phantom being built as an interceptor, the pilots relied more on missiles than their ACM, hence the heavy losses in Vietnam.

Not until the E came in, but they had the SUU-23 gunpod, disadvantage to that would be a slight bit of drag.

US lagged behind the Soviets. The launch of the first satellite and the Vietnam War proved it by 100%. A war in which US aircraft carriers with hundreds of planes on board failed to break the Soviet air defense system, who used imperfect, incomplete AA missiles and light fighter aircraft, whose price was ten times lower than the F-4 Phantom II. Modern technologies running out quickly in real warfare. Only honest iron and steel remains!

Have you guys looked at the air loss statistics of the Vietnam war? US lagged behind the Soviets. Maybe in a parallel universe.
