I just finished reading Battlefield Earth for the first time. There's a lot missing from the movie regarding the hero Johnny Goodboy Tyler and his horse Wind Splitter, the two are inseparable. Only trick, johnny is always seen wearing moccasins and tanned buckskin hide.
