Characters that didn't make it for the Brawl :/I think that if their abilities are explored, would make awesome Brawlers.
From right to left: Krystal (Star Fox series), Bowser Jr. (Mario series), Midna & Wolf Link (Zelda series), Mewtwo (Pokemon series), Mona (WarioWare series), Solana/Pokemon Ranger (...), Waluigi (Mario series), "Animal Crosser" (Animal Crossing series) and Claus/Masked Man (MOTHER series)

I have a whole Animal Crosser moveset somewhere. I'll need to post it on DA sometime. But yeah, Animal Crosser, Masked Man, and Mewtwo were real shames. ;__;

Here's how I see it:
1. Make Wolf Link a transformation of Link (Down-B) and give him and Midna their own moveset and FS.
2. Replace Falco with Krystal and give Wolf a ninja-like/heavy weapons moveset
3. Keep Lucario, replace Jigglypuff with Mewtwo, and give Mewtwo a new moveset.
4. Replace Ness with Claus

*Sigh* yes, all of those would have made nice additions.
(Though Waluigi is actually in the game as an Assist Trophy, and supposedly Krystal talks to you through the intercom the way Peppy and Slippy did in the previous games)
The game really needed some more female representation. ...and Krystal, Minda and Mona would have filled that quota nicely. (And that Pokemon trainer/ranger Solana too, I guess. I'm less familiar with her)

Yes, we need more female characters! That's exactly what I was thinking.
The Pokemon Ranger is something I came up with, she, instead of Pokemon Trainer, would really be there attacking, battling and all, but her Smash Attacks and Special Attacks would all be used by Pokemons that she summons. Like; B+down would be a Scyther using Double Team, something like Kirby Mirror's Dash Attack.

Because Sakurai left Nintendo, he only came back to do Brawl and nothing else.
Even at that Iwata Asks interview he said he would make Brawl as if it was the last game of the series.

Just because Masahiro Sakurai left Nintendo(I thought it was Hal?) doesn't mean the end of the Smash series. Smash is too much of a money maker for Ninty(900k+ in a week in Japan) to just let it go like that.
Sakurai and his affinity for male characters may be out of the picture, but Brawl will hardly be the last game of the series; I assure you.
It may be another 7-8 years before we see another game though.
