Maybe because they don't just live in North America? Ethiopian wolves live in Ethiopia.

Wolves are beautiful to look at, and they ARE intriguing to study, but I'm sick of the wolfaboos that continuously shove the wolf's dick down my throat. It's quite annoying, frankly.

I would never want a wolf. Except for few exceptions, I believe all wild animals should stay in the wild! (unless, like, good zoos and conservation/repopulation centers and stuff) I would never replace my Blazey with a wolf ever. *hugs*
Wolves are my favorite animal, but I do agree they are overrated. :/ Not the wolf itself, but the people who blow up their popularity in the most stupid ways. I mean, yeah, they are adorable and misunderstood to a certain extent, but are millions of other animals out there as well! (Bears, hyaenas, big cats, just to name a few carnivores!)
Guess I'm done here. You make a great point! /minirant

People keep on saying that wolves are "misunderstood". My question is: what about the grand majority of invertibrates? since when have anyone heard of people trying to protect mollusks or annilids? Oh, and when was the last time anyone has heard someone say something in favour of prochariotic cells or insects?

I think MANED wolf (not exactly a true wolf, a different family, more like a very tall and exotic fox) is much more interesting, elegant and beautiful than gray wolves. But nobody talk about it!!!
Well... you said about panda. But actually, thanks for WWF, giant pandas are overrated too. What about the cute and tiny RED panda??? ...just a few people know, I think.
I don't have anything against gray wolves, but I think people must cut off their obssession with just a kind of animal.

im not an idiot you know. the red panda, as you probably didnt read in my devious info, is one of my favorite animals. and the giant panda is not overrated. It is critically endangered and it is a very interesting animal. They are what you call "overrated" for a reason. they need help. Though i do like the red panda, it is threatened and not endangered. You are acting like the red panda is underrated when lots of people love these tiny mammals.
I bet that you dont even know what an olm is without looking in my gallery.
but you do have a point. ive seen maned wolves, and they are pretty cool.

it wasnt because of you bad english, i promise you. the WWF does also have a red panda piece of their program. but the panda has been their trade mark for years now
dont just assume shit. people know WWF stands for more than just the panda. the panda is just their logo.

I actually got a puppy about a year ago, a Boston Terrier. My mom asked me about hypoallergenic dogs and then well I wanted one from there. She cute but I'm more of a cat person anyways. xD I'm the kid that want the puppy or kitten and rescued animals. Rescued a rabbit once I kept him. I actually paid for the adoption of my kitten after my mom allowed me to get one.
But I don't understand why wolves are so popular or that people would dream of having one. They are NOT A GOOD PET AT ALL. Even wolf dogs are dangerous and require too much training for a kid to have. You make a point that 60 years ago, they did care much about wolves, tiger or other endangered animals. Its when they did it happened and well wolves somehow got famous.
What happened to the day when we were asking for puppies and kittens?

Apparently was stomped out by the demand for wolf and wolfdogs as pets.
And we all know how great exotic animals are. Just look at the woman who was mauled by the chimp.

Even though I've never really owned a dog ( Hell, they terrify me), this displays a very good message. I don't get how wolves are so damn popular; why not coyotes? Jackals? Hyenas? I can't exactly say fox because those are also overrated; though I think it's Naruto that struck the popularity goldmine with that :T ;;
There's one dog I love; Boxers. They look completely different from wolves, but they are amazing dogs with tons of willpower. Why don't people fall in love and swoon over those dogs? Oh, it's because they're not gorgous or majestic, I forgot.
When I was smaller, my dad had a two-hour long video of fish that I would watch endless times. It had no commentary or anything; just relaxing music and beautiful shots of the seas. There was one fish that I absolutely loved; I labeled them "The washcloth fish." The name is pretty self explanatory, but what they're actually called sea slugs [link] Seriously, how can you not love one of those? There are actually some adorable and amazing photos of sea slugs.
I really want to find out why in the hell wolves, out of THOUSANDS of species out there are practically on the top of the popularity food chain. Why aren't elephants popular? Oh let me guess, they're huge, 'ugly', wrinkly, and too complicated to draw. What about walruses? Same thing. I personally think those two animals are adorable.
I kind of find it funny that a lot of wolfaboos out there also draw blob-dragons, while dragons themselves are extremely difficult to draw because of all of the individual scales, wings, teeth, and horns. Pretty much wiggles their own idiotic attitudes like a huge hairy ass in front of their faces.
tl;dr, wolves are overrated.

I'm fond of Russian wolfhounds, those Borzoi dogs. They're very elegant. But they've such a high prey drive they'd play havok with my cats, and I'd never have the space for such a big dog. I guess I'll have to admire them from afar.

There's a huge association called WWF-They care about critcally endangered animals like Pandas,Elephants and Tigers. Why do people moan so much if people on dA care about one animal?People at WWF actually do something about it,and work their asses off trying to save them.People tend to forget that nowadays.

I adore border collies. Not only are they cute, but they're remarkably intelligent.
I also love African wild dogs. The poor dears. A lot of the stereotypes that surround wolves--they're endangered, they live in strong, loving family units, they're efficient hunters who use teamwork, they're majestic--easily apply to the African wild dog. While wolves may care deeply for each other, African wild dogs do the same, often bringing food back from the hunt for pups, babysitters, elders, and the sick. That, and they're absolutely beautiful creatures.
I love wolves. But African wild dogs need some affection, too, as well as some amazing dog breeds.

Ok, I like wolves. That isnt a problem.
GUYS, pay attention to actually endangered animals..wolves are fine. An example of an actually endangered animal is the Iberian Lynx...UNDER 100 left in the wild and under 40 breeding females left. What the hell? STop paying attention to wolves and how MAJESTICCCCKKK and BEAUTIFULLLLLLLLLLL they are. Wolves can't do crap. Even a 70 year old lady choked one to death and you call them strong? Har har.
And I do agree about the whole dog thing. What is so cool about a wolf? Dogs are better, i mean just think about it. Who doesn't want a puppy when they're 5!?
...D: Just please. STOP wolfaboos. Wolves arent the most amazing and endangered creature on earth! Not saying im a cat-aboo or anything but Iberian Lynxes..just..Under 100. That's what I call endangered. Approximately 38 /breeding/ females last time I checked..

I love dogs even more than stupid wolves!
I have 4 dogs and if I was offered a pet wolf I would NEVER give my dogs up for it.
Aside from me loving my dogs more, wolves do NOT make good pets. They're happier in the wild, where they belong.
Mankind has dogs for a reason, why the hell decide you want a wolf when a dog is a better companion? They're not going to kill you out of instinct, a wolf wouldn't think twice about killing you.

What it boils down to is reality vs fantasy. Having lived on or near farms most of my life in a semi-rural country I see the same attitude to things like pet lambs, and indeed pet ducks or rats. This relates mostly to what the animal doesn't do in the mind of the idiot. They won't make messes, they won't need regular feeding or exercise, or get sick or obstinate or bored. In the minds of many animals are like play machines, you have them merely for how awesome they are or how much fun you can get from them. Thus the mass dumping of animals two weeks after christmas. (Or here, the mass dumping of barn owls two weeks after every Harry Potter movie.) I think schools should make it mandatory for everyone to have to look after an animal for a week, just so they know that they're real, living organisms and not something to be kept for the fun factor.
Of course to cure wolfaboos this would require some actual wolves, and even I do not wish to sentence them to a life of that kind of misery.
