aiden is a young, shy, timid orphan boy (about 16) who lives in a Work House. One night the Work House is raided by these “strange men” (vampires), who essentially attack and kill all the boys and staff. Except one – Laiden. Aebutus, the “leader” of this group of men, takes a liking to Laiden and decides, pretty much on a whim, to keep him and essentially turn him into his own little living doll. So he takes him back to his huge, lavish mansion and gives him everything he could have ever asked for; fine clothes, proper food, a beautiful house to live in, he teaches him how to read and write. Basically turns him into a spoilt little Lord of the manor-type.

And in turning Laiden from quite a shy, scared boy into this rich, snobby brat, he has to deal with Laiden’s eventual and inevitable rebellious streak.

After one argument, in which Laiden demands his own room and is refused, he storms out into the grounds and is attacked by a rogue vampire who was obviously unaware that Laiden was Aebutus’ property, and therefore off-limits. Laiden is saved, of course, but after the incident Aebutus decides that Laiden needs to learn how to defend himself. So he hires a trainer, called Jonathan, to teach Laiden how to use a sword.

Laiden gets on very well with his trainer and eventually falls for him. The feelings are not returned, but Aebutus is still ragingly jealous when he finds out. He realises he is in danger of losing Laiden, so he decides to get rid of Jonathan in a way that can’t be traced back to him, because if he is seen to be killing Jonathan, Laiden will know and will hate him forever. So he poisons the tip of Laiden’s fencing sword. And the next time Laiden and Jonathan train, Laiden catches Jonathan’s skin with the tip of his sword. The wound is tiny, but the poison works quickly and, of course, Laiden is heart-broken because he assumes he’s killed Jonathan. So he does all he can do… he runs to Aebutus for comfort.

Eventually he finds out that it was actually Aebutus’ doing, and he’s furious. Not only because Aebutus killed the man he loved, but because Aebutus was quite willing to let Laiden believe that it was his fault. So he challenges Aebutus to a sword fight. Aebutus is quite amused and not at all interested in fighting, so he simply defends and deflects Laiden’s advances. But Laiden is pretty much blinded by rage and becomes careless and ends up literally running into Aebutus’ sword and impaling himself. And, of course, since he’s now dying, the only way for Aebutus to save him is to turn him into a vampire. Which leads to many decades of Laiden hating Aebutus, but being unable to leave, and slowly going mad.
