I always thought it was interesting that Superman somehow had the ability to fool everyone into thinking he was just plain old Clark simply by putting on a pair of glasses. Numbers of writers and creators have tried to explain why that worked but none of these explanations were really all that convincing.I think the best explanation for me was a demonstration of the difference between the two characters. It was the scene in Superman 2 where Christopher Reeve was about to tell Lois that he was Superman. To see him actually go through that change almost makes me believe that it could work after all. Almost.

Right you are, Ron. The disguise aspect of the Superman/Clark Kent character has always been a threadbare contrivance that wryly asked audiences and readerships to look the other way.
Christopher Reeve was the only actor to ever attempt to address this absurd premise. Everyone else, including George Reeves, Dean Cain, Kirk Alyn, and the latest, Brandon Routh, has failed to create a clear distinction between the two identities. Perhaps Reeve correctly consulted the early Fleischer Superman cartoons for inspiration. He understood that it's really Clark Kent that is the disguise, NOT Superman. Brandon Routh may have patterned his performance after Reeve, under the guidance of director, Bryan Singer. But Routh lacked the talent and screen presence necessary to smoothly pull off the comically charming transition.

I don't blame Routh at all. Genetics put him center stage (with the sole exception calling for the use of creepy blue contact lenses). However, I just found it unnerving, if not obscene, for the filmmakers to be attempting to "resurrect" the performance of Christopher Reeve (as well as essentially recreating Richard Donner's work). Instead of impersonating someone else, a new direction should have been committed to. Indeed, I may have gone with a period piece, exploring the true roots of the comic book character as he existed in the 1940s, and cast an unknown that resembled Alex Ross' take on Superman. But Hollywood's myopic dread is that kids today won't relate to, and embrace anything not from their era.

I think that was one of the main reasons why the movie wasn't successful. It was a technically great film but it was too reverential to the original Superman movie. Plus the fact that there wasn't enough action in it to satisfy the junkies.
I do like your idea of a Superman period piece. I remember around the time Superman Returns came out the George Reeves film Hollywoodland came out as well. I never saw I've wondered how it was. It looked pretty good from what I saw. I do think though that if you do a period piece you should go all the way: limit Superman to leaping tall buildings, super-strength, durability, senses. No x-ray vision, super-breath, or heat vision. Also, have him fighting gangsters and corrupt officials. That would be something.

Hahaha.. I was sharing the same thing with a friend a while ago. I wear eyeglasses myself too so its really impossible to believe that people wont recognize me just in case i get contacts and remove the glasses, for example.
