Description Along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, October 19th, 2022.

Our bus tour of the South Rim was part of the package of the Amtrak trip we purchased, so we were paying for it whether we took the tour or not.  I think another couple on the tour told us that it cost $80 a person. After the tour we learned that the Park Service ran free shuttles that would show up every 30 minutes or less, and visited the same places (and more) as the buses. So there was no need to pay anything for that.

Our bus driver/tour guide was a real prize too.  There were only two stops on the tour.  He said we would have 15 minutes at the first stop and 20 minutes at the second, and if we were late getting back he would drive off without us.  At the first stop he got impatient and left after just 14 minutes, leaving an elderly couple behind.

While the bus driver was driving he talked constantly but he didn't appear to know anything about the canyon or our two stops.  Mostly verbal diarrhea, but I do remember two things he talked about.  He told us that three days prior a bighorn sheep had attacked a hiker on one of the canyon trails.  That was bullshit.  Perhaps "once upon a time" something like that happened somewhere, but nothing like that had happened that year.

The second thing I remember is the bus driver told one of the passengers that she was "the spitten image of Eleanor Roosevelt".  I was kind of stunned that anyone would go out of their way to say that to a stranger.  But then he went on and said, "and if you think she was ugly, you should see a picture of her lesbian lover".  He then proceeded to tell us about Eleanor Roosevelt's lesbian lover.
