There is another photographer here on DA you posted a picture from 2008 rjcarroll.devantart.com/art/Afton-Oklahoma-Route-66-99451222 that shows this same block but at that time everything seems to be being maintained and open for business.

While I was taking pictures, a man approached me and said that there is an old lady who owns a lot of the old buildings along 66 in Afton, but she is not interested in doing anything with the properties. He said that once she passes away the family is hoping to restore some of them. I certainly hope so. Looking at old pictures of Afton, it is kind of amazing to me that there is so little left of the old commercial district.

I'm going to mostly give up looking for information on the Internet about these photos from this trip. I see there are some books for sale on Amazon that might be more useful. I'll update these with more information should I find anything.

The town was by-passed by I-44 in 1957.

The 2010 census showed a population of 1049 with 21% living below the poverty line.

The town's population has lately grown because the two nearby towns of Cardin and Picher have become Super Fund sites and have been abandoned. If you want to see something kind of creepy, go to Google Maps and look at the towns of Cardin and Picher with the street level view. They would have made great movie sets before they got leveled.
