Found this three year old thing in some sketchbook.So I colored it~
Pity that sometimes awesome characters suffer from being stuck in terrible stories. Awful stories.
Anyway, I preferred Shikamaru when his face and personality were uglier.
And I don't know why I drew him with a yo-yo.

Your style looks so different with the black lineart. I'm so used to the lineless and bright colors. XD
Still looks cute, though! It's been so long since I've read Naruto. I remember liking this guy, but I can't actually remember why, or what he did in the story. Just that he kinda had a 'tude and was fun. Was he the one who stepped on people's shadows?

Yeah, Shikamaru was the one who could control people when he made contact with their shadows. I always thought that was incredibly awesome~ Especially since the shadow power wasn't paired with a emo/dark/angsty personality.

Haha, I'm not sure at all what my train of thought was when I drew this, since it was so long ago. When I look at it, I kinda get a sense he was so bored that he started playing with a yo-yo, and then like you said, too lazy to take it off

I have only readed Naruto chapters before Sasuke ran away, so I don't know anything about Shikamarus personality after that. It just feels wrong if he is not same as back then. TTATT

I don't mind characters changing, they should grow--but Shikamaru kinda got delegated into a reserved voice of reason, everything he says is really appealing and even noble, and his lazy/whiny/disgruntled/sexist attitude isn't alluded to anymore. Maybe Kishimoto caught onto Shikamaru's popularity among fans and wanted to make him more appealing? Though to me, just cuz someone's appealing doesn't necessarily make them a good character so.

Admittedly, when I took a second look at pre-Shippuuden, it wasn't at all as great as I'd remembered--but I'll definitely agree it's leagues ahead of the horrid writing it's had for years now.

Well at fist Naruto was funny for me, but it's still "Meh...", I totally prefeer other animes (even if I'm not a fan of animes, honestly), but Shippuden make me wish the first stage of the series :/ Now I don't understand a thing of the 3845797 episodes they have

I'm the same way, I've only read/watched manga/anime that people force me to. The only one that's ever sustained my interest is Full Metal Alchemist, but I don't think I've even made it 1/4 of the way through that, so I can't say for sure if I like it overall. I'm re-watching it right now.

Yeah, very, that's why I prefeer watching cartoons over anime, they are more simple and not because of that they are repetitive.

Oh gosh I haven't watched/read this in 5 years and I have barely any recollection of what Shikamaru did, BUT I DO REMEMBER he was lazy and liked to watch clouds. A-yup.

Haha, I actually stuck with the manga for quite a long time... it kinda became satire of itself--so bad I could get a laugh outta it--but there comes a point where it stops being amusing

Hmm...I suppose it'd be the way you show boredom in his eyes, his cute nose, and the really low mouth that makes him look pouty. And I was also referring to his hair, I like it more than how it's drawn in the anime/manga--I prefer the brown and the more natural ponytail-thing. I really do like Masashi Kishimoto's style, I guess I just also like seeing anime characters westernized a bit (in a suitable way)
I have absolutely no idea what's going in the plot now, I just know people are calling it terrible.
