LOL I've been very lucky this summer. Also, I have learned some tricks with my camera that help. For one thing, I stop it down some (i.e. take a lower exposure). You'd be amazed how much color you get from that, if it isn't there already!

I generally do it a slightly different way by spot metering instead of matrix and alway metering off the lightest spot in the sky. That automatically stops it down.

Ah! I haven't figured out how to spot meter yet, if it can be done with my camera. Whatever works is good. Even though I'm not fond of the display on the back, it does momentarily display the pic as it is being stored. I can look and see if I got the exposure right. When I first got the camera, I took a lot of pictures that were overexposed without realizing it. I found that one of my lenses tends to overexpose at the same settings, compared to my other one. Weird how the camera doesn't pick up on that! So I have started routinely using the feature to stop it down. Of course if there is action, I can't do that, but I can always manipulate later if necessary.
There's a gorgeous moth in the room right now. I hope he poses for me later.

Actually, you can do it with matrix metering if you have a large enough area of light sky. Since I always focus on the clouds and not the foreground, I just focused on the lightest part of the sky and held the release down half way and redirected the focus to what I wanted. The spot metering makes it a bit easier but it is doable even with matrix.

My camera seems to have a rather interesting characteristic. Even if the foreground is way off to the side, it calculates focus using it. Fortunately, my eyes have improved enough so that I can also use my vision to narrow down the focus. Been stopping down the lens just to make sure. It helps, but I still take a gazillion photos and get a few that are truly in focus. Nice I can do that with digital without it costing me an arm and a leg.
I have found that my camera doesn't necessarily focus on the clouds all that well, though if I can get it to, I do, but if the foreground is out of focus, I probably won't use the shot.

I don't have a focus problem with either camera so I'll just wish you good luck on that one. Doesn't your viewfinder have a diopter adjustment on it? Even the slr Canon has an adjustable one.

I do have a diopter, and I have it set for my eyes. But the camera has the peculiarity that sometimes it says "focus" when it's not. I've learned to work around it.

Oh, that's not good. I'm glad I don't have to check mine for that!

I'm learning how to focus it, and it's working well; not much of a problem anymore.
My huge problem right now is all the junk that gets onto the sensor, and I have to learn how to clean it off. It has been a big pain editing it out of the ones I'm posting. But I'll go tomorrow or the next day and get a kit. I'd like to see them fix this problem. Maybe next design. I understand static is a big cause, and of course static is a huge issue where it's as dry as it is here. Had no trouble in Massachusetts. Right now, I have a collection of "fly specks" you wouldn't believe!

Oh, don't tell me that. I have a small round spot somewhere in my camera that leaves a slightly darkened circle on the upper right side. Easy enough to get rid of most of the time but I've taken the camera apart blown it out dusted with the little squeeze air and brush thingy, used ultra fine cotton, and anything else I can think of and still have a little round circle in each file. It isn't on the lens as it shows up with either one. Grrr...

Yep, that sounds like mine. I went to Monument Camera and got a kit, and he showed me how to use it. The sensor is nice and clean now. It's wonderful!

LOL I just picked up a spot! Well, I figure I'll probably clean it once a week, and blow it out other times.

Yeah, and I have a new spot. I tried looking at it, but I couldn't see it on the surface. I have to get a viewer. A flashlight with LEDs makes a nice pattern, but it's hard to see anything with it. This looks like an ongoing problem here because it's so dry there is lots of static. I didn't have any trouble on the east coast.

Yeah, I hear that. I haven't found a place that looks like it's my spot either even with added light and magnification.

The guy at Monument Camera has a magnifier that's wonderful. I asked him to get me one. It will cost $100.

Ah! Well, I will be getting one, I hope. My time is worth that much, and if I have to keep cleaning up specks on the photographs, I will waste a lot of time. Presently, I can trade off and spend the time more profitably. I have a job in the pipe that will pay twice that.
