“So, I guess this is it… She’s left us behind. We’re stuck as each other.” Stephanie said firmly with just a hint of somberness in her baritone voice.
“I mean, she can still show up any day now. And if we found one magic user, I’m sure there are others. There’s gotta be.” Jonah responded, cringing at the sound of Stephanie’s soft voice leaving his mouth.
“No, Jonah. It’s been months since she disappeared. Harper didn’t tell us where she’s gone, she didn’t leave a message, she isn’t responding to texts or DMs. Plus, we didn’t even really know her that well, she was just a friend of a friend with cool powers. She’s probably off saving the world or something, doing whatever a witch does nowadays.” She paused, looking down at her former face, hoping to console the now petite female man. “And I really don’t think we’ll have any luck finding another witch. Like, it’s something out of a fairy tale; google only comes up with stories and conspiracy theories. Face it, this is us now. I’m Jonah, and you’re Stephanie.”
“But, but, school’s over. What are we going to do? I’ve been keeping up with your pre-med classes so YOU can go to nursing school, not me! I don’t want to be a nurse! Our lives are just going to get more and more different. My life is over.”
“Hey, you don’t have to be a nurse, and nothing’s holding you back from being a police detective. Well, nothing but your own sexism. And yes, that’s kind of my point. Our lives are going to diverge more and more, and we can’t keep living while assuming that we’re going to swap back. She’s not going to magically appear again and swap us back, we need to move on and make decisions for our own new lives.”
Jonah deflated at that, his new form really did change his view on life. He no longer had the confidence to do the job he wanted. He looked down at his tiny hands, arms barely capable of benching the bar. He wasn’t sure if it was the new sex, the lack of strength, or the fact he now barely exceeds five feet tall that got to him most. The pair just looked at each other, not sure what to say. They never really got along, and swapping at Harper’s magic party didn’t change that, but they did have a new respect for each other.
The swap was just another one of Harper’s games, her parties had gained widespread popularity across campus for her magical antics. They were all in good fun, only lasting until the next party when she reversed all the magic tricks she pulled. That changed suddenly when Harper didn’t show up, it was like she disappeared off the earth and the internet. Those affected spent countless hours looking for her to no effect. Her mysterious disappearance almost made it worse for Jonah and Stephanie, their hope of swapping back painfully dying over the weeks and months.
Without another word, the swapped pair stepped away from each other, glancing back one last time before leaving to start the other’s life. The new Stephanie would watch enviously as her former body became a successful paramedic and married a beautiful woman. Little did she know that the new Jonah was doing the same thing, he was especially jealous when Stephanie’s baby shower was announced on her husband’s IG page. Maybe that’s just how life is, one can’t help but wonder what might have been, although a little magic body swapping definitely doesn’t help.
