I imagine that Mr. Game & Watch's bell was considered important when adding him to Melee. It's used for him grab attack, his edge attack, his taunt (and in later installments, 2 of his 3 taunts), one of his victory animations, his promo art for Melee and Brawl, and for his series symbol. Makes sense, as a ringing bell was a standard feature of Game & Watch games. You know, with the whole "Watch" aspect...I thought it would be cute to draw Mr. Game & Watch making music with Zelda. While I know very little about the Legend of Zelda games, I do know that Zelda occasionally plays the harp/lyre. Combine her string instrument with his percussion instrument and they could make some nice music together.
