Description I liked seeing this woman in traditional clothing,
surrounded by business suits at a busy station in Shinjuku.

You'r so lucky you got to go to Japan T_T i'm planning on going in 2010 in the summer to tokyo, did you go there with your parents? i would like to ask questions like where did you stay how much per night and how to move around, and if the food is too expensive and stuff like that

first of all, how long are you intending to stay? I stayed for 10 days and it was upwards of $1000 (spending money included of course ).

i'm staying about 2 weeks and the price of the ticket is already about 1000 euros so i guess i'm going to have to spend 2000euros a person?

Probably. Although Euros isn't the currency we have here - it cost me a little over 1000$ but we did stay with friends for a few nights, which cut down on costs. But make sure you check out your accommodation costs thoroughly. Add up how much it'll be every night etc. Don't round it out. Leave room for a (lot) of spending and public transport costs etc. It's really cheap to travel by train in Japan, and the trains are really fast. It costs about 150-200 Yen for most trips.

It depends, but you can get wonderfully cheap food. There were very cute little stores, similar to 7/11s, (I think they were called 'Ministop' but I'm not sure) where you could get entire meals of sushi for around four dollars. We went to a lot of restaurants too, but our Japanese hosts refused to let us pay every time, so I can't be sure on the prices there. Overall though, I think food is pretty cheap or decently priced. I never got the impression that anything was super expensive. Alcohol certainly is cheap. You could get Kirin or Asahi from vending machines!

Only some people are hostile. We only met one (a drunk guy yelling "fuck off Gaijin!") but he was the only one. Most people are unbelievably polite, and willing to go out of their way to help. eg. You'd ask for directions, and everyone's so helpful. I was on a bus next to a lovely little lady, and she was excitedly telling me about all the different sights I should see in the city. Everyone was just so nice. And the Japanese friends we stayed with for a few days were amazing. My brother got a lot of attention from Japanese girls and my sister and I got a bit of attention too, so it wasn't in any way hostile, almost the opposite.

Don't worry about being lost. Pretty much everything's in English (signs etc.), and you only need very basic Japanese to get by. If you find something without English translation, there's always someone around who speaks English. The only time I couldn't find anyone with any English was the day we spent way out in the country. But if you're spending time in Tokyo or other cities, it won't be a problem Just keep track of where you're going, because everything's huge and there's a lot of people. Just save money, (plan), keep your passport and everything safe, and you'll be fine. It's awesome.
