Phase Transporation
Peace, sweet glorious peace. Roaring winds be damned, they were shielded by a solid layer of warmth in the train. Loretta felt like she shed 40 pounds of clothing once they did the exchange and boarded the train. Hot delicious food, and hot cocoa. Sweet glorious hot cocoa to relieve the torturous cramps she'd been dealing with in silence near the end of their adventures in Obertauren. She actually regretted not changing from the IUD to something else that completely prevented periods, but the thing lasted 10 years and was more reliable for her size than the pills. It was pure chance she caught Eloise at the food cart, also coming to grab a warm drink.
"Hello again~ Grabbing something to warm up too?" Eloise sweetly greeted Loretta with a little chirp like tone, and a welcoming smile.
"Yep! Nothing feels better than hot cocoa to warm your bones on a chilly day.. or multiple chilly weeks." Loretta offered Eloise a smile as well, focused on making sure her cup had quite a few marshmallows, whipped cream with shaved chocolate on top. The past couple weeks had been exhausting, and she found chocolate was the way to fix everything. Literally everything.
"No lying there~" Eloise returned with soft chuckle. "Got to enjoy all the warmth we can get on the little breaks in between that we get," she added before lightly stirring her drink in hand so that was equally blended.
She nodded, wincing slightly when a cramp squeezed her insides in a vice. "We certainly deserve the rest. Not a big fan of the sweets?" She asked politely, walking slightly towards the exit since there were other people headed towards the cart and there was only such a limited room on the train.
"I do love sweets, just not too much. Sometimes they can be a little too strong," she responded with a smile before catching up with the woman. "You feeling alright there, Lo?" she asked, a bit concerned for them, the worried look on the blonde's face speaking volumes.
"Ahh that's understandable." She didn't quite agree with things being too sweet, but she could understand that other people had different taste buds. " Ah, it's just the umm.. well- the monthly situation. I wasn't expecting it to hit before the end of the last phase, but it came early to spite me." She made light of it to the best of her ability.
Eloise shook her head, “Oh dear, I see. A shame how they tend to decide to come in the most inconvenient of timings.”
“You need anything to help take the pain off? I got some medicine and patches in one of the satchels I brought in the train as a carry on.”
"Ahh, I appreciate the offer, but I'm sometimes a bit sensitive to medicine, even a high dose of ibuprofen can make me loopy. The hot chocolate will do wonders. We won't get the updated supplies until the final phase- after our ferry ride, and by then this bitch should be over with." She joked while opening the door to her quiet, shared, compartment, politely inviting Eloise inside.
"Ahh, okay, I understand," Eloise said, acknowledging that not everyone reacted the same to medicine and that it might not quite help fully at the moment regarding the travel situation.
"Well a dessert or sweet treat drink is certainly a good option to distract from the aches and pains that we have to deal with," she sweetly chimed to bring a little positive lift to the conversation they were having.
Upon being invited inside, Eloise gave Loretta a smile and a little curtly nod in thanks, before walking inside and waiting for them to take a seat first.
"I won't lie, I can't wait to get home and soak in a hot bath, maybe toss in epsom salts or a bath bomb. I bet Wilma has some herbs to help aching muscles. How've you been handling the trail, a bit sleepless lately?" She teased as they sat down on the red comfy 'couch', setting the hot chocolate on the table for now.
"Goodness, same here," Eloise agreed with a faint sigh before taking a seat to relax, She was about to take a sip of her drink when she heard the rest of Lo's words but stopped and lightly blushed at little teasing. "Well other than dealing with the rough side of nature and exhaustion, I think I'm alright so far," she began, giving a small smile before deciding to indulge their teasing a little bit, by adding, "I suppose I could say there was sleeplessness," with a chuckle.
Eloise then took a sip of her drink before continuing, "And you?"
"Oh trust me, I know about your sleeplessness." She teased, brushing her hair out of her eyes and sipping on her hot cocoa, while wiggling her thicker eyebrows at Eloise. "All of the above, plus cramps. So this is a wonderful reprieve... and the monthly woes should be gone in a day or two- being on the trail, in the saddle is not something I'd recommend in the future under certain circumstances." She spoke lightheartedly, as if it didn't truly phase her.
At hearing that continued teasing jest, Eloise couldn't help but smile, shaking her head with an amused chuckle before playfully feigning embarrassment: "Goodness me, was I that loud? I'm sorry." Only to sweetly giggle afterward. As Loretta continued on with how she fared, Eloise drank a little more from her cup. "Mmmhmm, it certainly isn't great at all."
"No you're not. " She stuck her tongue out playfully.
"You weren't nearly the loudest couple on the trail. Apparently there's some guy out there who moans like a humpback whale. I'd hate to be his neighbor if that was him trying to be quiet." She rolled her eyes at the idea. At least the noises would keep them safe from unwanted animals, like boars.
"Well, that's good to know," Eloise said with a stifled laugh. Hearing there were folk who were louder than them, she couldn't help but laugh a little more: "Oh no, those poor souls that were nearby," before giving a little sigh, putting the hot cocoa down on the table. Only to then lean a little back into the seat to get comfy. Eloise then moved a thick portion of her hair from her face a bit, "At least people will only have to deal with it a little while, hopefully"
"Yeah, it's probably a good practice in tolerance for some, and patience for others... Granted lack of sleep helps neither of those qualities." She smiled taking another sip of her cocoa.
"I suppose the real question is, how many baths will it take to get rid of the musk and stench of unwashed winter-traveling riders. Assuming everyone makes it past the next phase. I hear it's going to be harder- colder and higher elevation, so breathing might be an issue for some"
"Perhaps so, but I do have to agree that being denied some sleep can really make things harder to bear," Eloise stated, shaking her head a bit at the thought before glancing over at Lo at the mention of needing to bathe. "Well, it certainly might take more than one bath, for sure. As for the next phase, it seems so that it will be a bit more of a challenge, but we can only hope that people can hold on just a little while longer."
"Well, the good news is there's a lot of safety nets in place. So no one should get critically injured. I heard someone had to leave during the second phase. Which was good- I wouldn't risk my horse like that either if their legs were swollen and unable to continue." She took another sip, noticing Eloise had been messing with her hair for a hot minute. "Do you want me to put your hair up for you?"
“I’m glad that we are very fortunate to have such safety nets in place,” Eloise agreed in a way before looking a little worried at the mentioning of someone having to call it in the second phase. “Oh dear, I hope for the best for them and their horse. But is good to see some people who care about their companions health than trying to complete an event.” Upon hearing them offer to fix her hair she would give them a small smile and light laugh, “I wouldn’t mind it, guess I was a little out of it earlier to do much fixing, ahaha.”
"Yeah. It's important that we help each other- animals and all." Lo waited for Eloise to grab her brush, which didn't take too long. They sat up on the couch, tucking their legs under them for better height as Loretta went to taming Eloise's tresses. "Do you have a preferred style, or would you rather see what I come up with?"
As Lo brushed her hair she couldn't help but smile a little more before closing her eyes a little in content as well as comfort. At her asking on her preference she would think on it for a second before giving little chipper response, "I'm not feeling really picky at the moment so lets see what you do~".
They spent the rest of the evening chatting about various parts of the trip so far, what they were going to do when they got back home- and even mentioned future events they might catch each other at while Lo focused on braiding and arranging Eloise's hair.
It was sometimes just nice to have company, nice to relax in the warmth while winter raged outside. Part way through, they took a quick trip to refill their drinks, walking shoulder to shoulder- careful not to spill their mugs as they made their way back to the compartment.
"There we go." Lo said, putting up the rest of the combs, brushes, and hair bands. She'd done her best to be gentle- not knowing how sensitive her companion's head was. The light of sunlight had taken on a golden hue as the sun began to sink beneath the mountains, winter night pending.
"Should last a while, and won't fall out at night unless you do it yourself." Lo offered. Eloise smiled at Lo before resting against the shorter woman- who automatically put her arm up and around Eloise's shoulder giving her the opportunity to snuggle in closer.
