"Owww..." Heiji let out a small whine as you tended to the wounds on his face. You just let out an exasperated sigh as you continued your work. The hot-headed Osakan detective was your boyfriend of three months, and you loved him to no end. Ever since Kazuha had persistently pushed the both of you to confess, Heiji had always been with you. He made you laugh, comforted you when you cried, and protected you when a couple of punks from your class tried to pick on you.
But this morning Heiji hadn't been at school. He'd had a doctor's appointment, which gave your tormentors a perfect opportunity. They cornered you in the hallway and threw you into the lockers. When you hit the floor, one of them snatched your most precious possession: the pendant your late grandmother had made for you with her own two hands before she died. When you tried to get it back, they shoved you to the floor and walked away laughing.
Naturally, you'd been so upset when Kazuha found you that she'd taken you to the nurse, who in turn sent you home. When Heiji returned to school later in the day, Kazuha told him that you had been sent home by the nurse, and added that your pendant was missing. Of course, it didn't take him long to figure out that the punks who usually tried to torment you had taken it. Naturally, he was furious, and immediately confronted them.
And a fight began.
By the time it was over, Heiji was bruised and battered, although he was better off than the bullies. After a long talk with the principal, he too was sent home. But instead he made his way to your house, your precious pendant tucked safely into his shirt pocket.
Which brings us back to the present.
"Really Heiji," You murmured disapprovingly. "A fight? I know you have a temper, but you never beat anyone up unless they're a criminal..."
"These guys were punks," he grumbled. "I wasn't gonna let them get away with what they did to ya!"
You blinked, then sighed as the realization dawned on you. "Kazuha told you what happened, didn't she..."
Heiji turned around to face you, halting your treatment temporarily. "She told me you were so upset that the nurse sent ya home. And your pendant wasn't on ya at the time. Ya never take that thing off, it's far too precious. And if ya weren't wearing it, then that means they took it. And that's absolutely unforgivable."
He reached out and grasped your hand. "Ya mean more to me than anything, ya know that? I can't bear it when I know you're suffering."
"Heiji..."
"If it makes ya feel any better, I didn't try to fight 'em at first. I told 'em to give the pendant back, but all they did was laugh and say awful things about ya. Then one of 'em took a swing at me, so I fought back. But it did bring some good..."
He reached into his shirt pocket and pulled the pendant out. Reaching around your shoulders, he returned it to its rightful place.
You clutched the pendant tightly, tearing up. "H-Heiji...you..."
He pulled you into a hug. "I'm not ever gonna sit by when I know someone's making ya suffer. You're the most precious thing in the world to me. No one's ever gonna hurt ya again. I won't let 'em."
You smiled through your tears, just letting him hug you. Your pendant sparkled against your neck as Heiji held you. At first it was a testament to how much your grandmother loved you...
But now it was also proof that Heiji would always protect you.
