Description
Well, here't the final "Death Battle" to the Jesus films. The reason why I didn't use the "Death Battle" base for this is because I couldn't find one that had three things going against each other.
Meanwhile...DARN IT 1973!! You gave us "Belladonna of Sadness", you gave us "The Exorcist", you gave us "The Omen" and you've given us "The Wicker Man". Yet, somehow, in this peculiar year, you've managed to pop out not one, not two but THREE musical Jesus films! Coincidence, you, my audience, shall be the judge...
Why they're alike:
(1.) They have Jesus played by blonde guys...ESPECIALLY "The Gospel Road".
(2.) They're all musicals.
(3.) "The Gospel Road" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" have Mary Magdalene as the leading lady.
(4.) "Gospel Road" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" started as albums.
(5.) "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" were Broadway shows before their film adaptions.
(6.) "Godspell" and "The Gospel Road" focused on Jesus's teachings.
(7.) "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" had given Judas a sympathetic, if not, complex role.
(8.) "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" didn't really show Jesus's resurrection.
(9.) They had Jesus's life and teachings told through modern eyes.
Why they're different:
(1.) "Gospel Road" had a more conservative side in contrast to "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" 's hippie-like tendencies. To be fair, this was around the "Jesus Movement".
(2.) "Gospel Road" is the only one of the three to actually show Jesus's resurrection.
(3.) "Jesus Christ Superstar" had Magdalene be somewhat of a one-sided love interest of Jesus while "Gospel Road" just had her be a simple follower.
(4.) "Jesus Christ Superstar" didn't have John the Baptist. They had him mentioned though.
(5.) "Gospel Road" Mary Magdalene was the only character who spoke/sang along with Johnny Cash himself.
(6.) Johnny Cash, in "Gospel Road" was preaching about Jesus's life, "Jesus Christ Superstar" had young actors play out His last days while "Godspell" has Jesus and John/Judas play out the parables with a group of modern folk.
(7.) While "Gospel Road" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" had their light-hearted and funny moments, "Godspell" was the most silly.
(8.) "Godspell" is set in New York while the ladder films were set in Israel.
(9.) "Gospel Road" music genre is country, "JCS" is rock, and "Godspell" is more of a variety.
So, what do you think? Which is the best?
(I own nothing.)
