Dreamland is a dystopia. there is no government, no king, and no laws to bar its people. In fact, the whole country of Pop Star is more or less in a vicious state of anarchy. Many hopefuls not from the country itself believe that this state governmental vacuum will be filled, but they've been saying that for well over 50 years. As such, anyone can claim to be king in this land, and Dedede is no exception. The man is descended from a line of Dreamland royalty, but he really has no power over anyone in this torn-asunder land. With no people to govern, the "king" instead likes to lord it over the squadrons of Waddle Dees who see it necessary to help his family, as well as taking permanent residence in the once-great Castle Dedede on the nameless mountain he's decided to call "Mt. Dedede". Those few who still believe in the power of government Dedede also rules with an iron fist, asking much money, food, and raw material from his "subjects". Increasingly, the false tyrant's schemes and campaigns to return power to the throne have been thwarted by the creature known only as Kirby. Occasionally, Dedede tries to save his country from various evils, but the little pink child-thing always sees these acts as "naughty" or "mean".

At first, I really did think twice about King Dedede's nationality. Then I considered: everyone makes Dedede white, and this one should certainly be an exception; he sounds somewhat African-American in the anime's dub; and, for some reason, it fits Dedede well. So King Dedede ain't white.
