He's a robot with a scarf! What's not to like
I like how there's hints of color here and there, yet the over-all feeling is the desaturated look of an old photograph, making it feel like past good-ole memories
I love the hair-do of the girl in the back with the dress, hehe :>

Happy accidents to the rescue! Though with the minimal coloring, you can skip some of the more tricky issues like what color the sky should be (infinite options, but many "wrong" options and few "right" ones, y'know?)

That coloring technique was a sort of experiment, I started painting in blue on one layer, then playing with multiply and overlay layers. I might use and improve it in the future, why not.
And yeah, I agree. ^^ Though, I made the sky white to keep a good lisibility to the artwork. But I think my worst enemy are the buildings. Here they are barely pictured, just to balance the general composition and set the scenery. Now, I think this pic has a lack of depth.
Anyway, still need to improve.

I think depth only matters as much as you want to put it in? Some of the best illustrative art ever produced relied on strong shapes and colors to sell their story (some people tend to write off shape-based art as more graphic design than illustration). But certainly if you're trying to grow as an artist, it's a skill worth developing (backgrounds, I mean)

Is it intentional that Holly has that "oh, he is so good with kids, he would be such a good head of the family"-look in her eyes?

I guess it depends. There's some kids who love automatons, others who despise them, or afraid of them perhaps. Not everyone has the same view on an everyday good. Furthermore, even if humans and elves lived with them for a thousand years, they can seem unnatural for some people. Imitating life, and being the products of foreign knowledge.. (The Goblins) It doesn't stop some to worship robots. I should talk about the Holy Machine cult someday.
In my mind, Hollie looks touched, and amused by Gavin's situation. That's a cute scene after all. ^^
