Description My parents parceled out their courage.
On the long metal boat that cut through the water,
they broke the bridge of memory--
in line for bread, milk, a short command--
and stretched their fingers out toward the land like roots in the night.

City lights blinked back in the salty air,
and left welcoming sighs upon the rocks like oaths:
we are one broad heart. we will make you strong
with our patriots' blood, and our tongue
will be your tongue.

Men and woman stepped onto the bent knee of shore,
the street lamps reflected in their eyes,
like heroic constellations.
