First seen in Star Trek The Motion Picture, the Constitution Refit, also called the Constitution 2 Class or Enterprise Class, was a state of the art refit of the Constitution Class of 2245. Sporting a much sleeker look, with swept back nacelle pylons, an upgraded deflector array and an enlarged saucer among other numerous changes, the Connie-2 would blaze a path boldly into the next century.
The vessel itself measured 305 meters long and contained 21 decks within. It housed a crew of five hundred personnel, but could carry at least two thousand in emergencies. Its speeds were around Warp 7 at standard cruise, and could go up to Warp 10 in emergencies, all units taken from the TMP Warp scale. It featured six phaser batteries around the saucer, and two torpedo launchers were positioned on the neck.
The first ship of the ConFit Class to be launched was the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 out of Drydock in 2271, to combat a large and mysterious probe known as VGer, which was seemingly destroying everything in its path. In reality, it was one of the Voyager probes launched by NASA in the late 1970s. Its Captain, Willard Decker, called upon Kirk's help to stop the looming threat. He and Lieutenant Ilia became one with VGer shortly thereafter, and soon the probe ascended to another reality.
Fifteen years later, in 2285, the Enterprise was dispatched to stop the genetically engineered madman Khan Noonien Singh, stranded on Alpha Ceti 5, from hijacking the USS Reliant. Khan inflicted severe damage to the Enterprise using the Reliant, and after a bloody battle in the Mutara Nebula, he was killed after activating the Genesis, obliterating the Reliant and forming a new planet in the middle of the Nebula.
During the fight however, Spock, the half-Vulcan first officer and best friend of Kirk's, lost his life, and his casket was shot into space, whereupon it landed on the Genesis. After realizing from the ship's CMO Bones McCoy that Spock was still alive, Kirk, Scotty and Sulu stole the Enterprise, as the Starship Excelsior tried - and failed - to stop them. It was deliberately destructed in orbit of the Genesis after a brief battle with Klingons.
After some wibbly wobbly timey wimey shenanigans, saving the world from destruction, the command crew of the Enterprise were court-martialed, but their actions to save the Earth were acknowledged, and though Kirk was demoted down to Captain, he was assigned to a new Connie - the Enterprise A. It served for thirteen years and managed to save the Khitomer conference from rogue saboteurs, and for its part, was rebuilt and laid to rest in the Athan Museum, where its sleek retro lines inspired awe in many a cadet who visited it.
