Description A sculpture I made in sculpture class last year. One of my favorite works.
I love doing sculpture, and I'd do it more often if I had the space. =/

Depends on the kind of sculpture you want to make.
With my meditation sculpture, I first made the basic shape around some kind of pole thing that was sticking up out of the middle of a wooden base (I have no idea what it was specifically called. lol I forgot) by wrapping and taping newspaper around it to form the basic shape of the body. I formed the basic shape of the head, torso, upper arms and the legs in newspaper first. If you use that method, you want to make sure that applying 1/2 to 2/3rds of an inch thick of clay over it will make it the desired shape. (In other words, don't put too much or too little newspaper.) After the newspaper form is done, you can flesh out the rest of the figure with clay, shaping it with tools and the like. Do NOT completely surround all of the newspaper with clay. Leave the bottom exposed. I'll explain the reason for this later. If you have to work on it over the course of several days, make sure to spray your sculpture down thuroughly with water and cover it securely with a double layer of plastic bags, that way the clay won't dry out.
As for the shaping and making textures on your sculpture, you'll want to make sure that you aren't wearing any jewelry on your hands and that your fingernails are short to avoid random annoying marks.
Rub the sculpture down with water with either your hands or a sponge - which ever you prefer.
Once the sculpting process is done, let the sculpture sit for a few days, until the clay is firm. I can't remember how many days I had to wait. I think it was a week. I kept it covered though. To be safe, you may want to keep yours covered and check up on it occasionally.
You'll know when it's ready to put in the kiln when the clay is still greyish, but firm and solid to the touch.
At that point you will need to take the sculpture carefully off of it's base and take out as much newspaper as you can until your sculpture is mostly hollow. If you need to, use tools to scoop out the newspaper. It'll be soggy...and, well...maybe even moldy, but that's nothing to worry about. A little bit of newspaper here and there is ok. It will burn to ash in the kiln.
Something to keep in mind: excess moisture and airbubbles trapped in a sculpture can cause it to explode while being baked. This is the reason why your sculpture must be mostly hollow AND all the soggy newspaper taken out of it.

As for instructions on what temperature to bake clay sculptures at and for how long, I'm not sure. I made "Meditation" in a classroom and my instructor was the one who put the sculptures in the kiln and monitored them.

Anyway, I hope this was very helpful to you. ^__^ If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will answer as soon as I'm able. ^^
Goodluck!
