When mine were smaller (they're huge now it feels like!) they'd climb the sealant in the corners of the tank. Then hang upside down and scare me that they might fall from the top of the tank. Or escape (almost stomped on Curly when he ran across the floor to try to get into my purse...he looked like a cockroach at his speed...or get chewed on by the friend's dog we were babysitting for a weekend...oh, Nibs...).
In all honesty, he/she probably climbed up the column just like that. Mine have also climbed the thermostat cable...that's wrapped in aquarium tubing...
These guys should be called climbing crabs, not hermit crabs!

They jump when we're not looking, haha! When hermits really want to climb somewhere, they'll get there. There have been a few times when I've caught my own hermits hanging onto the hydrometer even though it looked to be out of reach. At least it looks like Namaste had fun getting up onto the column!
